As is well known, this quotation from Shelley appears over the score of the Second Symphony, and it's also appropriate to this utterly delightful disc.
Ashley Wass has already carved a niche for himself recording Bax and Bridge on Naxos, and on this disc he records both Elgar the miniaturist and the composer's own piano arrangement of the Enigma Variations.
He faces some stern competition: both Peter Pettinger (Chandos) and David Owen Norris (Elgar Editions) have recorded fine concerts of Elgar's music for piano, and I would not wish to be without either of them.
But this disc joins them as an equal: playing and recording are "out of the top drawer"; but, for me, the 'find' here is the Enigma for the piano. Surely it cannot really work, can it?
With the partial exception of "Dorabella" - where I felt the loss of the orchestral delicacy - it is well worth hearing, and, played this well, worth hearing again!
At this price, don't hesitate.
