5.0 out of 5 stars Television at its best, 26 Dec 2008
By Nobody Famous (The West Country, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I watched these series at the time and had almost forgotten them. It was an eye-opener to watch them again. I hadn't really noticed the BBC dumbing down but when you watch these programmes you realise that it is going on.

The most striking thing is that in these series there is no 5-minute explanation of what you might've missed last week, or of what to expect next week or constant repetition of who everyone is and what they've just told you. In these half-hour programmes, you really do get 30 minutes of material.

Apart from that, these 3 series are very informative, well presented and a fascinating insight into the past. Some of the techniques are worth trying at home or on the allotment, as well. Well worth the money, although I see the price has gone up since I bought them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem, 5 April 2009
By Redaurella (Sydney Australia) - See all my reviews
Although getting old now, this is not only a fascinating and lyrical examination of a grand Victorian garden, its plants, tools, architecture and technology and its relationship with the "big house"; it is a valuable historical record which preserved one man's priceless gardening knowledge. A real treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Nu' isn't always better!, 8 July 2009
By Emteq "Emteq" (Down where the drunkards roll) - See all my reviews
Fascinating and informative. A journey back to when England was at ease with itself, before everyone was agitating about their 'rights' and demanded plasma TVs and granite kitchens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
A real gem from the past! Makes it all the more sad that the modern-day BBC serves up wide-appeal Barratt-home dross to its gardening audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great TV
The Victorian Garden series takes you back to the days when the BBC made so many great programmes. This is one of the best. No violence, sex or even excitment. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I agree totally with everything that DWM says. The 'Victorian Kitchen/Garden' series were superb productions by the BBC, something that they sadly no longer make. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the finest
I missed this when it was on the TV. It is quite marvellous - it is a real eye-opener as to how British TV has gone downhill over the last ten or so years. Read more
