5.0 out of 5 stars here it is - the classic black and white series., 27 Sep 2006
By Mr. A. E. Ward Davies (Canterbury , England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
at long last, every black and white episode from "the saint" is released in one boxset for the first time on d.v.d.
this is the series that really started the "cult t.v" craze in my opinion. i can't think of another british programme that is as popular as this one, except maybe "the prisoner" or "the avengers."
the black and white programmes ran from 1962 until 1965 and amount to 71 in total.
only roger moore could bring leslie charteris's creation of simon templar to life, as he has easily made the character his own. i have noticed attempts by other actors to play the part; george sanders being one of the better ones.
there is an interesting documentary on the making of the early series, but should have been on for longer than it is.
despite the fact that very little was done in the way of location shooting, the script, acting and direction more than compensate.
in each episode you will notice quite a few familiar faces in the supporting cast; derren nesbitt, patrick troughton, anthony booth, nigel davenport, john carson, dudley sutton, oliver reed, honor blackman, shirley eaton plus many others.
also included are a few audio commentaries which are good at explaining what went on during the making of an episode.
the company who released this should hopefully be doing the same with other similar programmes. let's hope so.

4.0 out of 5 stars Is Black & White Best?, 12 April 2007
By Greg (England) - See all my reviews

I only had a couple of B&W episodes on video, so I haven't got the duplication issues previous reviewers have had. I have no memories of these stories at all - my childhood memeories are all of the colour era & presuambly the 70s repeats did not include the B&W episodes. So this set is a gem as far as I am concerned, much as the pre-Diana Rigg Avengers episodes were. The stories are pretty well written, but then being based on the Charteris originals they should be I guess. There are little grating points such as the strange semi-American accent that Roger Moore adopts, and the far too frequent re-using of certain actors in different roles (sometimes in consecutive stories). You sometimes get confused as to whether they are supposed to be a returning character or not. Also, did they have to have so many story titles consisting of a woman's name? Of course I'm nit-picking with tongue firmly in cheek. It's classic 60s television, but from memory, quite different from the colour, non-Charteris based era.

Well worth buying. Now for the colour episodes...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Black and White episodes are finally here!!!!, 26 Dec 2007
By D. C. Holbrook "Dee" (WV USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have waited with bated breath to have the entire collection of episodes of The Saint. Now I have them. I too purchased "The Saint: The Early Episodes, Sets 1 and 2". I had wondered why the other B/W episodes had not been released in a box set or otherwise. It would have been ideal for me as I live in the US and technically need Region 1 DVD's, which is what code my other B/W's are. It would have been great to just add to the collection I had already started. However, right now I am just thrilled to have the complete 71 B/W episodes all together. I am getting a multi-region DVD player so that problem will be taken care of as well. I already have the complete set of color episodes that A&E released several years ago. Now I have all 118 episodes of The Saint starring Roger Moore, the one and only Simon Templar!!!
