Synopsis
Written by John Sullivan, The Green Green Grass features John Challis, the loveable rogue Boycie from Only Fools and Horses. Joined by his long-suffering wife, Marlene (Sue Holderness) and teenage son, Tyler (Jack Doolan), Boycie disappears into the countryside after he hears the notorious Driscoll brothers are after him for grassing them up. Quick to settle in his new-found surroundings, Boycie soon re-invents himself as a gentleman farmer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Its corny but no question it is funny, 29 Dec 2006

(REAL NAME)
The Green Green Grass is a British sitcom created and initially written by John Sullivan, and a spin-off of Only Fools and Horses. It first aired in 2005 and two series have so far been shown.

The series is a spin-off from the long-running sitcom Only Fools And Horses and focuses upon two of the supporting characters from that series, Boycie and Marlene, as they move from London to the countryside. The series notably expands on the characters, giving them greater depth and - particularly in the case of Boycie - more warmth and humanity than they displayed in Only Fools and Horses. It was the first programme to be made by Sullivan's company Shazam Productions, and it is shot in High-Definition format, and as a result is simulcast on BBC HD.

The only regular cast member of Only Fools and Horses to make a guest appearance was Denzil, who appeared in the first episode. Boycie has made veiled references to Del Boy and Uncle Albert on several occasions without actually using their names.

The Green Green Grass was a typical square-peg-in-round-hole sitcom, enlivened by the odd sharp Sullivan line and the simple pleasure of revisiting Boycie and Marlene. Comparisons with Only Fools were unavoidable but also self-defeating since very few shows seem tall set against such a well-loved giant. That said, one disappointing element of the new creation was its depiction of the regular local characters, all of whom seemed outrageously and unrealistically eccentric.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great spin-off from a legend of a comedy., 1 Oct 2006

Not sure if this was going to work at first with it being a spin-off from only fools and horses but in my opinion it works very well and is very funny.
The story follows the charactors of Boycie and Marlene and their now teenage son Tyler who move from the city to the countryside where Boycie has become a farmer, although there is a reason for moving so quicky.
All the charactors are funny and all the actors and actresses perform very well. The scripts have been written very well and the whole show works very well.
This review is based on watching the show on tv,with the dvd not out for a little while but when it is available i will be purchasing it and i highly recommend that you buy it or rent it at least.

My wife watches every episode every other day.
This series following on from only fool and horses exploits of Boyce'e and Marlene, leaving Peckham to the countryside to escape the Driscol brothers is nearly as good as only fools'.
I recomend not only buy this but the second series which is as good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny and very unlike Fools and Horses
I really loved the GGG and actually prefer it to Fools & Horses. Even though it's supposed to be a F&H spin-off, it has little to do with it. Read more
