Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

He's always received second billing to Stephen Stills in Crosby, Stills, and Nash, and once played third fiddle to Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark in the Byrds, but there is no doubt that David Crosby is one of the true originals of a folk-rock style that has paralleled his 40-year career, which is celebrated on this three-disc set of hits and near misses, demos, and outtakes. The first two CDs run chronologically, from the Byrds' "Eight Miles High" (which Crosby co-wrote) through his '70s and '80s solo records to "Through Here Quite Often," from his 2004 album, Crosby/Nash, with Graham Nash. Crosby was the draftsman of the transcendental harmonies that defined both of his bands, his plaintive vocals generally serving as a complement to the others'. But he takes the lead on this 52-song collection's greatest moments: his chilling falsetto on "Music Is Love" (from his 1971 debut solo release); a call out to his dying mother on "Carry Me" (1975's Wind on the Water, with Nash), and "Yvette in English," a 1993 collaboration with Joni Mitchell (Thousand Roads). Some selections swing and miss--"Hero," co-written with Phil Collins in 1993, and a few recorded in the late '90s with CPR, featuring his son James Raymond--but Voyage recuperates with disc three's 16 previously unreleased tracks. The jewel? "Cowboy Movie," a 10:57 opus from 1970 featuring both Neil Young and Jerry Garcia on lead guitar.--Scott Holter

CD Description

Over the course of three discs, VOYAGE neatly navigates thelong, rich career of David Crosby. Though he's best known as one-third of Woodstock-era folk-rock harmonists Crosby, Stills & Nash, the man with the angelic voice and the walrus moustache boasts a resume whose high points extend well beyond that association. VOYAGE doesn't stint on CSN (and sometimes Y) material, but the journeys into his early days with the Byrds, his solo albums, duo recordings with Graham Nash, and latter-day work with CPR are equally telling. From the mid-'60s Byrds tracks up to the present day, Crosby's knack for close, complex vocal harmonies, unusual jazz-influenced chord structures, and raga-tinged melodic lines serves as a connecting thread. VOYAGE allows listeners to follow Crosby's winding path through disparate eras, stopping off to marvel at the gorgeous sonic scenery along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some strange trip with The Cros, 22 Nov 2006
By Mr. A. W. Riggs "bernard shakey" (Wallington, Surrey United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A fabulous package encompasses 3 cds, great photos and interesting liner notes by David. CDs 1 & 2 feature a sort of best of in chronological order, anyone familiar with David's music will probably have these songs in some form, the decline in David's muse is evident on the later recordings. CD3 is called 'Buried Treasure' and indeed it is featuring some fabulous new songs and the much bootlegged 'King of the Mountain' a poignant song about Stephen Stills. Even if you have most of the music from the first CDs this is an essential buy - much maligned during the 80's & 90s David has survived drugs and prison, his music is testimony to his vast talent that seemed to have been snuffed out by his attraction to the dark side - but thanks to the likes of Nash he is still with us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crosby;part of the weaker half!, 22 Nov 2006
By W. J. Marshall (southampton, hampshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A gloriously produced, sumptious box set of a very underrated artist. For a long time i was one of those who thought Crosby, along with Nash belonged to the less talented, weaker half of CSNY.Time and Crosby has proved me to be very wrong. His creative renewal of the last 18 years has left his partners in the shade, especially his work with CPR.This is a tremendous overview of his career. The tracks have been remastered to sound fresh and sparkling. The disc of unreleased material is a real gem.Two unreleased tracks of CSNY especially stand out. They give a brief glimpse of what the group could have achieved without the drugs or egos.Nash has said box sets of his and Stills" work will be eventually released. They can"t come soon enough on the evidence of this one. They would be very welcome, along with a set of CSN/Csny archives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Voyage.., 6 Jul 2008
By Allan Allcott - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The inevitable conclusion to be gleaned from this voyage is that this man is a musical genius. He may have plumbed the depths in his personal life (see the two volumes of his autobiographies) and made some terrible life choices but his music stands alongside any other artist. From his work with the Byrds, through CSN/Y, the solo work and latterly CPR this is a fine collection of wonderful songs and performances.
Lovingly put together by Graham Nash and Joel Bernstein the packaging is wonderful, the booklet highly informative and the Buried Treasure CD a joy to hear.
If you are wondering whether the price is justified then the answer is yes. Buy it and enjoy it!
