Synopsis

J.J. Abrams, creator of small-screen hits ALIAS and LOST, makes his feature film debut with the third installment of this successful series based on the hit 1960s television show. Secret Agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) has decided to take it easy and lead a somewhat normal life. He’s even found his perfect woman, Julia (Michelle Monaghan), and is engaged. But when newbie agent Lindsey Farris (Keri Russell)--whom Hunt mentored--goes missing while on assignment, the reluctant agent finds himself back in business. Soon, with his old buddy Luther (Ving Rhames) in tow, along with team members Zhen (Maggie Q) and Declan (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), Hunt is traversing the globe on the trail of Farris's captor, Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman), an elusive international weapons dealer. The stakes increase when the villainous Davian gets a hold of Hunt’s fiancee and uses her as a bargaining chip. A raucous combination of spectacular chases, explosions, amazing stunts, and elaborate schemes takes the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) team to Berlin, the Vatican, and Shanghai. With fascinating hi-tech tools these secret agents can impersonate virtually anyone, scale walls in an instant, infiltrate the tightest security system, and blow up the evidence when they’re done. But facing their most formidable foe ever, Hunt and his fellow agents are fighting the clock to keep Julia alive and get Davian the mysterious weapon he is demanding. Cruise’s personal involvement in the stunts lends a nice air of authenticity to Hunt, who also shows his emotional side in this outing as he juggles his secret life and his new love, as well as possible betrayal by someone inside the IMF. Laurence Fishburne also stars as IMF’s Director Brassel, and Billy Crudup appears as his somewhat timid right-hand man, Musgrave.

3.0 out of 5 stars "There comes a point where bold becomes stupid.", 1 Nov 2006
By M. J Leonard "MikeonAlpha" (Silver Lake, Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Although Mr. Cruise may look fantastic, the absolute picture of health and physical fitness, in his latest outing, Mission: Impossible 111, his special agent formula seems to be wearing a bit thin. With lots of explosions and action sequences that look as though they have been almost edited out of existence, this third film in the franchise takes us to some exotic locales - Rome, Shanghai and Berlin, but it doesn't really offer up anything new or fresh.

Ethan Hunt (Cruise) is about to get married when he's sent on a secret mission which secretly re-assembles old team, now comprised of Ving Rhames, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and luscious but wooden supermodel Maggie Q. They all head out to capture evil international bad guy, arms dealer Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who is after something called the Rabbit's Foot (much to our frustration we never actually find out what the Rabbit's Foot is).

Fine actors Billy Crudup and Laurence Fishburne take small roles as bureau leaders. And Michelle Monaghan ends up kicking some b*tt as Ethan's lovely wife Julia. Obviously director J.J. Abrams is doing what he does best, bombarding us with extremely loud explosions, bulging rock music, prolonged gunfights, a series of chases of different varieties, jump-cut editing that's more like a teenage MTV video, and a convoluted plot that eventually leads nowhere.

This installment is certainly fused with a dark and furtive quality: there's torture scenes, unstable devices shot up nasal cavities into people's brains, ruined buildings, and women in danger. When there aren't explosions, there's lots of Tom running, and tumbling etc. The narrative makes no sense and Ethan's romantic entanglements do nothing to lend the movie any emotional gravitas, still the action sequences, when they're not shot in the dark, are at least well done and have an edgy, exciting quality about them.[...]

5.0 out of 5 stars great, but still not better than the first one! , 13 Sep 2006
By Marko Stew "MS" (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
when i saw that jj abrams was going to direct this one i thought it was going to be alias on the big screen - which it was - but this isnt a bad thing...cruise reprises his role as ethan hunt and is excellent as usual in the lead role...ah, if only he hadnt been on oprah...michelle monaghan plays the love interest well and the always impressive ving rhames is back as luther. more of maggie q please in this type of role...she is stunning and kicks some serious butt as part of ethan hunt's team. its philip seymour hoffman though that steals the show as the bad guy - he should do more of this - the opening scene between him and tom cruise is excellent and sets up the rest of the film as a roller coaster ride of excitement - if action is your thing then get this, but dont expect to see the same as the first mission impossible - which for me is still the best of the 3 with a perfect blend of action, drama and thrills.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but you can't beat Bond..., 25 Jan 2007
By S. Barnes (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Good fun. Great action shots. The usual cheesy "Bond" take-off you get from MI.

Not the kind of film I buy as I reckon once you've seen 'em once, you've seen them! But if you like light-hearted action and you're in the right mood... watch it! You won't be disappointed! Some gripping action, a good dose of love interest... it's all there.

Only real criticism is, since the lead (Tom Cruise) spends the entire film chasing the "Rabbit's Foot" (some kind of biological/chemical weapon, we're led to believe) it would've been nice to know exactly what it was!!
