DVD Description

Green Wing - Series 1 & 2 is a four-disc box set featuring the first two series of the critically acclaimed, hospital-inspired comedy. This genre-defying TV show takes and altogether unconventional view of the health service, proving that medical issues needn't have any actual relevance in a hospital setting. Produced by the same team who brought you "Smack the Pony", the series is more concerned with the antics of its dysfunctional characters than with real medical issues, and consequently it plays out like a surreal soap opera. It combines the cream of British comedy actors, inventive use of editing--in which sequences are often sped up and slowed down--and an offbeat sense of humour, to create an unusual and imaginative comedy.

Synopsis

The Green Wing - series 1 & 2 DVD follows the escapades of Dr. Caroline Todd and her hilarious encounters with a number of eccentric co-workers. The assortment of bizarre characters introduced in the first two series include: Guy Secretan (Stephen Mangan), the smooth talking part-Swiss anaesthetist and all-round misogynist; Dr. Alan Statham (Mark Heap), one of the kinkiest doctors you'll ever meet and a man whose affliction is to think out loud (something that the cheeky intern Boyce likes to exploit); the dashing but aloof Dr. 'Mac' Macartney (Julian Rhind-Tutt), whom Caroline may or may not have a crush on; Joanna Clore (Pippa Heywood), the moody, age-obsessed HR Director; Sue White (Michelle Gomez), the sociopathic staff relations counsellor; the hapless junior doctor Martin Dear (Karl Theobold); and the irritatingly perfect Dr. Angela Hunter (Sarah Alexander).

5.0 out of 5 stars Green Wing - Series 1 & 2, 22 Jul 2006
By Ian Dunn (Stockton-on-Tees) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"Green Wing" is the BAFTA award winning sitcom/sketch show/comedy drama/soap opera about the surreal East Hampton Hospital Trust, an NHS hospital somewhere in England, which is heavy in the number of staff, but low on patients.

"Green Wing", created by Victoria Pile (Smack the Pony) follows the misadventures of its staff, most notable of which is Dr. Caroline Todd (Tamsin Greig), a new surgical registrar who is never more from one step away from total humiliation. Through her journey, we meet the rest of the staff, such as half-Swiss womanising anaesthetist Dr. Guy Secretan (Stephen Mangan), effortless cool surgeon Dr. "Mac" Macartney (Julian Rhind-Tutt), kinky consultant radiologist Dr. Alan Statham (Mark Heap), his love interest, 48-year-old HR director Joanna Clore (Pippa Haywood), sociopathic staff liaison officer Sue White (Michelle Gomez), unloved house officer Dr. Martin Dear (Karl Theobald), Alan's nemesis Boyce (Oliver Chris), perfect paediatrician Dr. Angela Hunter (Sarah Alexander), mother of four Harriet Schulenburg (Olivia Colman), down-trodden Karen Ball (Lucinda Raikes), abusive Kim Alabaster (Sally Bretton) and the very Naughty Rachel (Katie Lyons).

Whilst visiting the hospital, be prepared to look out for love affairs, discoveries of new family ties, murderous plots, cliffhanger endings, an operation in Geordie, a man eating a gall bladder, an incident with a dwarf and a stuffed heron, a 30 feet tall homoerotic image displayed on the hospital walls, and the bizarre sport of "Guyball" (pronounced gheeball).

Funny funny funny funny funny, bloody funny. If you missed it on the tele, you have missed out on a fantastic piece of comedy. Not everyone likes Green wing, but those people are just plain weird. Buy it and you'll not stop laughing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr Statham (Mark Heap) tops a brilliant cast, 11 Dec 2008
By R Simons (Australia) - See all my reviews
There is no overcoming this comedy set in a real hospital. I found Dr Statham with his stuttering anxiety and perfectly timed slapstick to be amongst Mark Heap's meister works (so far, he is an under rated comic genius, he is great in SPACED too). Tamsin Greig is wonderful again as Dr Todd, and Sue White slays with insanity and a very wonderful "you can't have that, your too fat" comment. The two series end too soon and the christmas specials are a must. There is so much in this series, brilliant characters, even a peewit would call it good value. Julian Rhind-Tutt as Dr Macartney is Dr Todd's love interest but they dance around the issue in a comic waltz that is the centre of a much broader mayhem of tortured lives..... truly brilliant scripting on so many levels. Get it - it is great.
