DVD Description

The Hornblower – The Complete Collection DVD box set contains the entire set of episodes from the Hornblower series. Based on the character of Horatio from C.S. Forester's stories, the show revolves around the adventures of a gallant Briton named Horatio Hornblower (Ioan Gruffudd), who fought on the high seas during the Napoleonic Wars. First broadcast in 1998, the period drama is initially set in the 1790s and also stars Robert Lindsay and Cherie Lunghi; the Hornblower screenplay was written by Russell Lewis.

Synopsis

The Hornblower series begins in 1974 in Portsmouth, England. As a fierce squall rages in the English Channel, a pale-faced 17 year-old midshipman huddled at the stern is just embarking upon his career in the Royal Navy. Sea-sick and drenched, Horatio Hornblower is laughed at by his new comrades as he boards a ship for the very first time. Little do they realise, however, that this young boy is destined to become one of the most courageous heroes of the Napoleanic Wars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Sea bound adventures., 7 Aug 2007

If you enjoyed the film, Master and Commander, or read the books of Patrick O'brian and are looking for more, then Hornblower is perfect for you. More high seas adventure and swashbuckling than you can throw a stick at. Considering the lack of a hollywood budget and the fact they were made for TV, this series is just amazing. The navy based equivalent to Sharpe, I would strongly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a bit of action and adventure.

Would also say to shop around, not sure how long it will last for, but have just found it online at HMV for £17.99 in the sale, now that makes it even better.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a shame they never finished it, 16 May 2009
By Dr. Giles C. Watson (St Mary's, Isles of Scilly United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

The series gives a very faithful renditions of the novels anthologised by Penguin books as 'The Young Hornblower'. It is a tragedy that it stopped there: it would have been marvellous to see adaptations of all the other novels. It seems typical of recent television that the lamentably inferior Sharpe series should have run on for so long, while this one was abandoned with Hornblower newly wed and just promoted to Post-Captain. All of the episodes are good, but the best by far is 'The Frogs and the Lobsters', in which Hornblower is compelled to assist in a suicidal attempt by French royalists to reinstate the monarchy, and is left high and dry. The scenes in which a local tyrant erects a guillotine in his town, and systematically sets about slicing off the heads of everyone who has cooperated with the Republicans, are chillingly brilliant.
