Product Description

Based on true events that took place in Tennessee during the 1800s, An American Haunting tells the story of the only documented case in U.S. history (validated by the State of Tennessee) in which a spirit caused a person's death. With over 20 books written on the subject, and a town that still lives in fear of the spirits' return, the story is terrifying.

A very watchable movie, other reviews are harsh and obviously don't appreciate a stylish, well written and beautifully shot film. This movie pulls you in and keeps you guessing to the shocking end. It's scary in terms of the suspence but it's not a horror movie, if you loved Sleepy Hollow you'll love this.

I had the chance to buy either An American Haunting or Silent Hill on DVD. Unfortunately I feel that I made the wrong choice with An American Haunting. The trailers for the film made it look great and after putting it in my DVD player, I was hopeful but sadly for me the film just doesn't deliver.

Based on the novel The Bell Witch, the film starts in modern day America when a young girl finds herself drawn to an old diary and old porcelain doll that was discovered in the attic. Her mother soon takes it from her and when she reads it discovers letters from the nineteenth century that warn that the unthinkable has come to pass. We are then took back to that time, to a village that once stood around their home.

An American Haunting was moderately scary in places and relays more on the supernatural element rather than blood and gore to scary the viewer - which in my opinion is always the best way to go about it. An example that comes to mind is when the young girl is violently dragged up a flight of stairs by an unseen force. The atmosphere created throughout is very eerie and tense which really helps the tone of the film. Also the acting is pretty good, mainly thanks to a solid preformance from Donald Sutherland (who plays John Bell.)

But it wasn't enough. There are just too many questions left unanswered. To me, the film doesn't really make complete sense and has a slow, shaky, and boring beginning that doesn't pick up much as the film continues. While watching I couldn't help get the impression that certain aspects of filming were rushed, as in some scenes the characters seem desperate to finish their lines.

Must first of all say I disagree strongly with the first two reviews written for this DVD. This is a rather good film, however the story telling suffers a bit. I found myself thinking this is just another haunted house-story and I couldn't quite see where it was leading, or how the two stories in the film were connected. In fact I was tempted giving up on the film several times but didn't much due to to the superb acting of Sissy Spoacek and Donald Sutherland, who as always throw in a solid performance. However seeing the ending of this film made it all worth the while. It has one of those twists that make you see the film in a brand new light. For this very reason the film turns out to be a very interesting one, standing out from your average horror film. However I still feel the film is a bit of a missed opportunity due to the first 3/4 of the film. All things considered not a bad film but could have been so much better. There is a lot more potential in this story.

There are many things in this world I will never understand, and one of them is how this movie's ratings can be so low. Simply put, An American Haunting is the best haunted house movie I have ever seen. I have to admit I did not like or approve of the way the story ended, and the modern-day intro and exit scenes were wholly unnecessary, but everything in between is pure haunted gold. I have to believe that some viewers' dissatisfaction comes from knowing what happens before they see the movie, as even the editorial review on this page reveals one of the film's core secrets. As much as I disapprove of its existence, that particular secret (which bears the unmistakable fingerprints of sleazy Hollywood) plays out beautifully in the film's presentation. Cut out the modern-day cinematic bookends, and this film has one of the most impressive scripts I've come across in some time. The much-ballyhooed cast play up to their potential and then some, the direction is flawless, and the special effects (including the POV scenes that some viewers ridicule) are, to my mind, incredibly effective. I absolutely love An American Haunting.

Basing itself on the only documented case in US history of a spirit causing someone's death, An American Haunting basically markets itself. Don't get too wrapped up in the historicity of this movie, though, as director Courtney Solomon plays fast and loose with the true story of the Bell Witch. The "based on true events" moniker is in fact quite disingenuous, as this movie is really based on Brent Monahan's purely fictional novel The Bell Witch: An American Haunting.

...then this is your movie. This is one of my favourite suspense/horror/paranormal movies of all time. The twist at the end is brilliant and would be very difficult to deduce, because pertinent information is witheld from the viewer until the end. I don't want to spoil it, but denial of truth when faced with evidence is a strong theme in this movie. The age-old question of whether witchcraft/demons/paranormal activity exist or not is explored in a unique way. This movie is a bit like The Sixth Sense in that you are given hints that are easily noticed in subsequent viewings. Unlike a previous reviewer, I enjoyed the tie-in to the present day and how we often miss what is plainly in front of us. I also enjoyed the very talented cast members performances and the way the movie did not leave us hanging as to the outcome of one of the main character's life.

Remember that things are not always what they appear. Or are they?!?
