COOL!!!, 12 Sep 2006
Although I'm sure many would agree with me when I say that the original cartoon series of `Yu-Gi-Oh! will ALWAYS be the best, the next generation of duel monsters, `Yu-Gi-Oh! GX' is admittedly, REALLY COOL!
Yugi and his friends are no longer the star duellists in this new TV series as we are now ten years into the future and they've grown up a lot since then. Instead, the story now revolves around a young, mischievous, over-confident and very adventures young boy named Jaden Yuki, who just happens to accidentally end up running into a now grown up Yugi Moto while on his way to the duel monsters academy. Yugi, sensing a positive future for this young boy, gives him one of his cards (Winged Kuriboh) telling him that he has a feeling that it belongs with him. From this point on, Winged Kuriboh and Jaden share a strong, psychic bond to each other.
Jaden makes it to duellist academy where he meets his new true friends, a shy young boy named Sirus (who bares a resemblance to Yugi's features and personality before he met the Pharaoh and all of his other friends) and a fat guy (no offence to him as he's really nice) named Chum Li. Jaden also befriends others, such as Alexis (who also bares an amazing resemblance to Seto Kaiba. Maybe they're distant relatives or he had a daughter) and a cool guy named Bastion, whom at the beginning appears to have something against Jaden but deep down respects him and only wishes for him to take his exams more seriously (as in, not sleeping through them, LOL!). It doesn't take long before Bastion becomes one of Jaden's best friends.
The theme song (which I'm guessing is called `get your game on' and coincidentally just happens to be Jaden's favourite motto) is a really cool and addictive song that has me singing along to it every single time I watch this DVD, as well as the additional episodes on Sky Digital.
Everyone who loves the original TV show of `Yu-Gi-Oh!' should not be put off from watching this new series just because the Pharaoh and the original main stars are no longer present. If you're not sure what to think of this, at least give it a chance, watch it and judge it for yourself. I'm sure you'll not be disappointed. If it makes you feel any better, Jaden is like a mixture of Yami (the Pharaoh who lives within Yugi's Millennium puzzle) and Joey Wheeler, naïve, overconfident and sometimes a little hot-headed, LOL!
Watch this. I know you'll love it!

Ace start to the next chapter of the amazingness that is Yu-Gi-Oh!, 1 Jun 2008

So, with this DVD we have the beginnings of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, the follow up to the massively successful original series. I've seen GX touted as a spin-off but in reality it's more of a direct follow on even though it starts an entire new storyline with new characters and locations etc.
Kicking off with an extremely catchy theme tune which you will quickly grow to love (and will be going round your head over and over again - 'Get your game on, you gotta play your cards right!') GX is on the whole a more energetic affair than the original series and that energy only adds to the complete addictiveness that made the original so popular. Once you watch one episode you feel compelled to go straight onto the next.
While i think the characters in GX don't immediately have quite the richness and depth of Yugi, Joey and chums from the original they make up for it with added element of comedy GX plays on. While Yu-Gi-Oh! always had its funny moment, GX takes this to the next level - confident, cocky Jaden coming up with all the best insults to enfuriate his opponents with. What with Jaden's instant chemistry with shy but totally charming Syrus + the completely over the top character of Dr. Crowler (questionable outfit, hairstyle and mannerisms all included) make for a fantastic range of characters - something for everybody really.
Perhaps the best highlight of these first four episodes has to be Syrus falling for Crowler's love letter ploy as he runs off to Alexsis, sure that she must be in love with him. Its totally cute! This also represents the overall feel of the series - moving away from the gravitas of the original series, GX explores the day to lives of its characters more and because of this feels more realistic as a whole.
And of course, there's the Duel Academy itself! What Yu-Gi-Oh! fan wouldn't want to live somewhere like that! The place refelcts GX as a series itself - a new generation, cheeky, youthful and full of opportunities to charm and fascinate. A brilliant start to a brilliant series and yet another chapter in the wonderful entirety which is Yu-Gi-Oh!

2. Welcome To Duel Academy [Jaden vs. Chazz]
