When you are a martial arts actor, there comes a point when you have a burning ambition to direct, produce, action choreograph and ultimately be the main star in own movie.
1972. Bruce Lee was successful with "The way of the dragon."
1986. Jet Li struggled with "Born to defend."
Did Donnie get his movie right in 1997?
Yes.

Why does it sell?
1) Story
Donnie plays the legendary wolf, an old soldier recalling his warlike, muddled past to an arrogant young killer. The meat of wolf's tale is Donnie, with no memory must rely on his wits and battle hardened skills to survive the post world war 2 era.
2) Fight scenes
Donnie's main strengths were displayed here with turbo adrenaline fueled fights that seemed to be the mainstream in "iron monkey."
3) Morale of the film
Beneath the selling points lies something that gets you thinking and reflecting when you finish watching the film. It's an action movie that shows what consequences violence can inflict.

Why does it fell?
1) Transfer to dvd could be better.
A minor complaint. Pictures are fine. Just unsuitable for widescreen.
2) Lack of bonus features.
3) The film with dubbing is crud. Try getting a copy with the original language to avoid disappointment.

The movie has aged a little bit and I would not consider this to be revered well as a timeless classic as "The way of the dragon. But this is an above average popcorn action flick that would entertain.

Donnie yen shows why he can claim to be the new big boss, this is one of the best action kung fu films ever,as donnie shows in scene after scene of relentless kung fu masterey why he is for me the best since the original big boss Bruce lee.The film is set in the modern day with flashbacks to a few years back, nicley shot with a decent story and acting, and no silly comedy action, just no holds barred kick ass fighting.Nothing to do with the great original Bruce Li film Big boss, but one of the besT if not the best kung fu of all time,if youve seen donnie in Iron Monkey,In The Line Of Duty both top films, this one leaves them in the shade. If you like kung fu's Buy it now

I'm not even comenting on the film as I can barely see it as this is blatantly downloaded and ripped onto disc. The case is cheap and stinks like chip fat with a hint of onion.

This whirlwind of great action and fightscenes is truly amazing! The renewing way this movie was filmed and edited makes it so refreshing and original and keeps you focused on it from the beginning to the end!The martial arts are fantastic and the fightscenes are very energetic!Donnie Yen is an amazing martial artist and apparently has some great directing in him as well! The storyline may not be the most original or intelligent one you have ever seen but it good and the way it is told is just beautiful!I really liked this one and I can recommend it to everyone!everyone should have seen this one, if only for the refreshing way the story is told!
