5.0 out of 5 stars A little gem, perfectly formed and hidden amidst dross!, 24 Oct 2006
By Mr. Martin Hardy "martinhardy2" (Darlington, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I stumbled upon Brian Houston performing on a live session on BBC Radio 2, hearing only two songs I was straight onto the internet to research and try to hear some more. Initial investigations on wikipedia revealed that he was a bible thumper from New Zealand! D'oh, wrong "Brian Houston"!

The REAL Brian Houston is a singer songwriter from Belfast. If you go to his website you will find that you can download and listen to snippets of this album in MP3 format. (www.brianhouston.com) I strongly suggest that you do. Once you have done that hurry back here and do as I did, order the album and start telling your friends how you have discovered this marvellous artist. I guarantee if you like the exerpts you will not be disappointed by the album.

For an artist only now coming to the attention of the media he has been active for some time and the maturity shows in his songwriting. I like to fancy that you can detect his influences, and I suspect that Mr Houston has been inspired by Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Van Morrison (and perhaps Richard Thompson?). He sings in a distinctive "Norn Iron" brogue and all the better for it, rather that than the affected mid atlantic drone of many contemporaries! The producer on this CD is Nigel Stonier (ex Fairport Convention and long time "collaborator" and producer for Thea Gilmore - and now husband of!) and the album is beautifully clear and simple in it's production allowing the songs to shine.

Sadly I missed Brian on his recent tour supporting another up and coming band The Storys and like the boys from Wales he has been promoted by "Whispering" Bob Harris who has created the track order for the album.

Bottom line? It's a lovely little album, recommended without hesitation to any music lover without prejudice.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last Brian gets the exposure he deserves., 15 Sep 2006
By Niall Balmer (Stranraer Scotland) - See all my reviews
Brian has been writing and singing his own material for several years now, and at last this album is bringing him to a wider audience. This is an excellent album with no weak songs. As always the songs Brian writes and sings are from the heart and this adds to the impact of this album. From the opening End of the Beginning and Childish Things which get the album off to a great start, through the heart rending Ballad of Matthew Shepherd and Red Badge of Courage Brian shows that he can adapt and pull off many different styles. The Bonus live track at the end captures a sense of the fun and enjoyment which you get when you see Brian live. This is an album not to be missed and will serve as a good introduction to anyone of what Brian and his music is all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars great sing along and touching cd, 17 Aug 2006
By Loretta Bradley (london) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a fantastic cd. Every song is beautifully written and sang. He can do up tempo and slow songs. This cd sounds like a modern chris issack or roy orbison, and my neighbour said bob dylan. His belfast accent comes through as he sings, and the belfast humour! A great guitar playing singer.I look red badge of hounour as my friend had cancer and this is a touching uplifting song about surviving.
