Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Based on a pure western atmosphere, the game draws on the major themes of the American Wild West through the confrontation of two powerful and iconic characters.

Epic duels, train robbery, horseback riding across unending terrain, fights from horseback& All the ingredients of the best western movies are blended seamlessly together in Call of Juarez.

Choose to play as either one of two stimulating characters: Billy, a young fugitive accused of murder, or the merciless vigilante hunting him down, the Reverend Ray, an ex-outlaw who turned to religion, believing that God Himself has chosen Ray to be the instrument of His wrath.

Amidst the twists and turns of this absorbing psychological story aspect, players will also encounter a wide variety of gameplay features, with many differences between the stories of the characters.

Product Description

Call of Juarez features classic gunslinging action including duels, shootouts and barroom brawls. Players will relive the days of the Wild West in numerous settings including local saloons and brothels.

In the single-player campaign, players enter the world of two opposing characters equipped with contrasting weapons and styles. Ray is the retired gunslinger turned rough-and-tumble preacher. Billy, a sneaky and elusive man befriended and trained by Native Americans, is on the run. Authentic Western situations chronicle the cat-and-mouse game played by Ray and Billy. Players are forced to make split-second decisions to escape the grasp of Ray or get their hands on Billy, and outwit secondary characters throughout this Western setting.

  • Exploitation of physics and innovating simulation of fire, liquids, dust, smoke and gas.
  • Amazing graphics that fully exploit the potential of the latest video cards.
  • Play either of two characters with their specific gameplay style and abilities.
  • All the western in a video game: horseback riding on never-ending maps, horseback fights, train robbery, gun fights, and more!
  • Screenplay inspired by the most famous westerns of the 1970s and 80's.
  • Solo and multiplayer modes.

5.0 out of 5 stars [...]good western!!!, 8 Oct 2006

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Although not as good as gun(my favourite game), Call of Juarez is still a really good game. The basic story is about a former-outlaw, Reverend Ray who chases Billy Candle for killing his brother-or so it seems. The game chapters see you constantly changing between the hunter Ray, and the young Billy.
Enviroments are bloody incredible and most chapters are long. The two characters are different in quite a few ways.
Firstly, Billy is more of a stealthy character who uses bows and arrows and whips more often than firearms. However, most of the time he dosn't really need weapons in the levels. Reverend Ray is more of a dark character. I preferred him since he has a better western feel to him. He always uses weapons such as revolvers, rifles and shotguns but also always carries a bible. The bible can be read out to confuse enemies.
You start off as Billy, returning to your home after two years in search of the gold of Juarez. It takes quite a while to get to town(Hope) and in the end, you have to sneek away otherwise you get shot down. Anyway, when out of town you go to your mum and stepdad's farm. It ends there. After that, you play as Ray. He hears gunshots and finds Billy at the farm with the mum and stepdad dead. That is basically the reason Ray chases Billy in the game. Because Billy's stepdad was Ray's brother.
Now the gameplay is really good. The weapons for starters are great and you can have whatever two revolvers you want in each hand. You can even have a sawn-off shotgun with a revolver or a stick of dynamite. When the enemy is hit by a round, blood splatters on his clothes and the impact looks decent. The horseplay is cool two and some chapters has you chasing others on horseback.
It does go slightly etchy sometimes but not much and there arn't many glitches.
Pros:
*Amazing graphics
*Cool choice of weapons
*Nice environments
*Large levels
*Realistic

Cons:
*A little annoying when you keep dying
*Pretty long loading times
*Having to play as Billy when he's crap

Overall:
Graphics 10/10
Gameplay 9/10
Sound 10/10
Realism 9/10
Replay value 7/10

A [...] good western!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars I've played worse, but I've played better too., 26 Jun 2007

Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
I picked this up relatively cheaply, and it's basically, at best, rather "OK". The game features an advanced 3D engine which looks very pretty (it's up there with Oblivion in terms of effects) if you take your time to admire it, but the gameplay itself is very lacklustre.

The levels alternate between a lightly-armed, agile and sneaky Billy, and an armoured, gun-slinging Reverend Ray (voiced by Marc Alaimo, AKA "Gul Dukat" from Deep Space Nine). Rev. Ray's levels are OK as an FPS, while Billy's frequently revolve around the "if you're detected the game is over" kind of stealth mechanic.

The general feel of the game, however, is very "stop-and-start". This is literally the case because there are *lots* of "chapters", which are a by-word for "loading zones" which actually take quite some time to load even on a decently-specced PC; you'll be twiddling your thumbs for a couple of minutes at a time. When you're Rev. Ray, you also have a "bullet-time" analogue in gunfights, but only if you holster your guns first, *then* quick-draw - so gun battles frequently devolve into stop-and-start slow-motion affairs, and it gets old quickly. Regrettably, there are also jumping puzzles in Billy's levels, most of which result in instant death if you misjudge it - jumping puzzles etc. just don't work well in first-person.

This is worth a look if you love Westerns, but worth skipping if you don't - there's plenty of better FPS options out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best "Wild west" game yet, 1 Oct 2006

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Amazingly, games based in the wild west are surprisingly rare. There are only three that I can think of including this one. Red Dead Revolver was a pretty good attempt but it was pretty limited and it spanned a number of very different and barely connected levels. Gun came next and this was more like a Grand Theft Auto style game, with a free-roaming landscape and the ability to steal horses to get around on.

Now we have Call of Juarez and this is a bit of an eye-opener. Set in and around the town of Hope, you play the part of two characters on alternating chapters. First you play the part of Billy, an orphan raised by Indians, who must use stealth and cunning to get by. He's handy with a whip which he can use to swing from branches as well as defend himself. He's not a very popular guy and the town of Hope aren't too pleased to see him. Next you play Ray, a mad preacher who has just found his brother and family murdered with Billy at the scene of the crime. He must go after Billy and deal with anyone who gets in his way in an typical FPS way but with primative guns. The differing styles of play are refreshing, even if the Billy levels can often be frustrating.

If you have a powerful PC you are in for a visual treat. The scenery and the detail of the characters is stunning. The game makes use of shader model 3, which brings with it full HDR. Current hardware can't handle HDR and full screen anti-aliasing at the same time so you need to crank the resolution up as far as your monitor can handle to get the best out of it, but the HDR (high dynamic range lighting) is very effectively used and adds to the stunning eye-candy.

I have a few complaints about the sound. There is an OpenAL sound option which should work fine on my Creative X-FI, but it often misses out the speech and other vital sound effects. Best stick to DirectX sound for now until its patched or the drivers are improved.

Controls work just like every other first-person shooter, making it fairly intuitive for shooter veterans.

Call of Juarez is a very enjoyable game and an absolute treat on a high-end system. There is also a multi-player option which I haven't tried yet but deathmatch in a cowboy hat can't be avoided for long.
