4.0 out of 5 stars Tony Hawk Project 8 (Xbox 360), 10 Nov 2006

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I am a skateboarder.
Therefore I may be a tad bias, but meh listen up homies!
Ok so the demo of this game (downloadable from Xbox Live Marketplace)is amazing and the most addictive demo ever made, this obviously, made a good impression on you all and you are all ready to part with your hard earned cash for this game.
BUT there is a few things that I must write about that may put you off buying it, here we go;

Customization is limited:
Create-a-skater remains but not in great detail.
Create-a-park, create-a-board and create-a-graphic are now gone.

The levels are quite lacking in Neversofts high standards, the only 'new addition' so to speak, is the fun park, which is...fun! School, suburbia and the factory levels are ideas that have already been done in previous tony hawks, no new place has really been created except the fun park, and it seems Neversoft are relying on old ideas even through this next gen transformation period.

Ok, so you most problably feel gutted now. Well chin-up dudes, heres the great stuff:

Graphically, it looks beautiful, the detail in this game is high quality and what you would expect of a next gen game.

Nail the trick mode has to be the greatest thing to hit the tony hawk franchise for 6 years (yes time flies) where the manual was introduced to tony hawk pro skater 2.
It involves the player to move both analog sticks as your 'feet' for example ollie off a ledge and press both sticks in and then the slow mo kicks in and the camera zooms into your feet allowing you to control them.
Insanely addictive it may be, even though it lacks realism, I say this because I don't know any skater who can triple impossible - triple kickflip - 540-shove it, off a 6 foot ledge. Its just not right. But who cares, really?! If you could do that in real life there would be no point in the game.

Also another unrealistic but highly addictive addon to the series enables the player to bail/stack/fall over anywhere, at anytime, whenever you feel like it, even when you aren't on your board. All you have to do is tap all four top buttons and then laugh at the skater as the rag-doll physics take over. This alone is awesome but neversoft have decided to put hospital bills in, AND the ability to break bones, don't panic however as this doesn't effect your skater and is all just for laughs, I have managed to break 16 bones in one stack, the hospital bill for that totalled up to 90,000 dollars!

Fresh new skaters have been added to the game, but some of the oldies have bailed out, but don't worry yourself rodney mullen, hawk, and burnquist are still in there.

There is quite alot more but im bored of writing this review.....
But anyway I must conclude on this statement: Buy it, its fun, an xbox must, and you will be playing this for at least a year (obviously not everyday but yeahh).

Oh and watch out for GEARS OF WAR, also released on the same day, that game is 10/10.

Happy skateboarding,
Matt

(REAL NAME)
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Having not played a Tony Hawk's game since it descended into the "Jackass" culture with Tony Hawk's Underground I was delighted to see they've gone back to what was good in the first 4 games and made it better. Project 8 keeps the sandbox way of American Wasteland where you have one large environment and you must do task etc to unlock further areas. Each challenge you have several levels to attain so there's always an incentive to go back to the ones you did at the start to see if you can improve what you did.

So what about the gameplay? Well everything is as intuitive and recognisable as any past Tony Hawk's game. However this year they've introduced probably the best addition to the franchise yet, "Nail The Trick." This mode can be induced any time by click both sticks, your left stick controls your left foot and you right stick controls your right foot. There is immense satisfaction gained when you land one of these mainly because you made up the trick, the combo was your own and it's not one of the "stock" tricks. It takes some getting used to but when you get the hanf of it you end up marvelling at your tricks.

Graphically the game is rather stunning though some of the models of the pros aren't the best facially. The environments though are brilliant and when you induce a bail it sometimes looks a bit too real when your character hits with a thud. The soundtrack to the game is as good as ever and it also has the customary videos of the pros at work. There is very little to fault with the game it really is almost perfect.

In the end I think Project 8 is the best Tony Hawk's game ever and really anyone who likes skateboarding or wishes (like me) that they could skateboard properly this is a must buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good game but could have been even more better., 11 Dec 2006
By Michael (England) - See all my reviews
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Tony Hawks's project 8 is the latest game in the Tony Hawk's series and comes with a load of new features. The story line in project 8 revolves around becoming one of the top 8 skaters in the world (Tony Hawk's project 8). This story line works well with the game but runs on the same format as the disappointing American Wasteland. This gives you one massive world for you to skate around, needing you to complete objectives in order to unlock more areas for you to skate in. Some of the new features in this Tony Hawk's game are the new graphics that are very impressive, also this game has the best physics you will find in almost any sports game they are truly amazing. But the most new and very welcome feature is the nail the trick mode and this will keep you up all night. Now how it works is very simple when you are in the air you can push the two analogue sticks and it slows down time and just focuses on the board and your feet, and the left analogue stick becomes your left foot and the right stick your right and you can move them around to do flip the board around. This will take you a wile to master but once you have done it you will love it and become addicted to this game. Now even though this is probably the best Toney Hawk's game they have left a lot of features out this time around, these include the create a skater, create a park and create a board mode and you do feel if they had put these in this could have been the best ever Tony Hawks game, but as it stands its just a very good Tony hawks and worth you time.
