More Of The Same..., 18 Jul 2006
I managed to get hold of a promo copy of this album, something I'd been after ever since I heard their self-titled debut a few years ago. At last, Ratatat had finished their second album, definately one of my most anticipated releases this year, along with the likes of Thom Yorke and Muse's efforts!
I didn't quite know what to expect. Would it be similar to their previous album, or would they change styles to something more rap based, along the lines of their Remixes Mixtape? It turned out to be more of the same. On the first few listens though, I wasn't too impressed with what I'd heard. It all sounded too similar. Nothing new...
But, as with their debut, this is an album that takes time to grow on you. Ratatat had it's major stand out tracks, and you had to take the time to appreciate the others, after which the album came into its own. And it's the same here. A few more listens and more tracks began to stand out. The forthcoming single "Wildcat" hit home first, then the sublime "Lex", probably my favourite track on the album so far.
Yet whilst it remains similar to its predecessor, it has its differences. This is a more upbeat album on the whole, tracks starting off melodic before the electronic chords jump in, and it can't help but make you smile! Then why the 4-star rating? To be honest, it's hard to say. I don't really give out 5-star ratings unless an album is perfect, and this is probably just a little too similar to the last one to justify that. But it's still superb, don't get me wrong.
If you've heard the band before, you'll no doubt be buying this album anyway, and if you haven't, it comes strongy reccomended!
