2.0 out of 5 stars Ring mains/Curcuit breaker problem with this HDX101, 9 Oct 2008
By John Breakwell "J" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
See the following review which I think would be usefull/apply for most people.

http://techdigs.net/content/view/74/46/

For most households there are 2 ring mains (upstairs plugs and downstairs plugs) This product works really well if you want to network via EOP using one ring main (ie downstairs only or upstairs only). You will know if you have 2 ring mains in your house by the circuit breaker box/fuse box (ie you can switch power off independantly to different parts of your house))

The problems comes when you want to network across the 2 ring mains - expect speeds of up to 4mbps if you do. this would be enough for data access only - not good for streaming HD or DVD. I have had to get a refund for these unfortunatly, as I wanted to network from my downstairs living room to my bedroom upstairs.

I never knew this and I bought 4 - three for upstairs one for down - the 3 upstairs had good speeds (150mbps) - the one downstairs performed at less than 4mbps transfer rates (I live in a house less than 5 years old) - so hope this review helps others to decide if this type of networking works for them. Netgear really are mis-selling these products.

Also the tech support are dreadful .. I was on the phone for 30min, and all I got was Netgear don't recomend these be used on the same circuit breaker - they don't support it ... well maybe netgear should advertise this on the sell/packaging!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but does what you want, 6 Jan 2008
By A. Hughes - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have 3 of these devices at home. One connects to my wireless router, another to a hub in the upstairs office whilst the last is plugged in behind my wall-mounted LCD,m connecting to a netgear media streamer. Using this setup means I get good wireless downstairs, full 16Mb broadband upstairs and lets me stream TV shows from upstairs via the netgear in Hi-Def. Setup was easy, done in 10 minutes using the supplied CD-ROM. From that moment it has all worked perfectly and whilst I don't think I'm getting 200Mb of bandwidth, I'm getting sustained video streaming and internet activity without ever skipping a beat. The only downside is the units are pretty big, with the cable sticking out of the lower right hand side which means you always want to plug it into the right-hand of a double socket. You also need to use proper wall sockets and not an extension. Another power socket gone eh!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good solution for big houses, 1 April 2009
By G. R. Farmer "Skuzzlebutt" (Liverpool, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I live in a big house and play X-Box 360 in my room, the WiFi would never cover the area from the Router to my Bedroom before and it posed a problem for ages until I bought one of these systems.

Yes the connection isn't as fast as if you ran an ethernet wire through the ceiling downstairs across the landing and into my room but honestly who has the time or money to be doing major structural changes to your house for an internet connection.

These things will put the internet into a room you couldn't previously do so in, and like I said I use mine for online gaming I have a smooth clear image with no jerking or slide framing from low Internet speed and it works perfectly for me.
