DVD Description
In 1937, Japanese troops raid the Chinese city of Nanking to execute a planned massacre by subjecting over 300,000 helpless civilians to various tortures and atrocities before slaughtering them all.

Synopsis
This film is often classified as a horror film (most likely because it contains some of the most gruesome footage in cinematic history). Though that may work to sell the product, in some sense this is an injustice to what the director meant to achieve. If only the subject matter was the stuff of fantasy. This bold and utterly uncompromising film unveils the real life horrors of the Nanking Massacre. It describes the real life nightmare through the eyes of two young brothers who witness the brutal murders of their parents. While trying to escape with their uncle, they get separated and have to struggle for survival on their own. The story line is peppered generously with actual film footage and historic photographs. Yes, some of the images of slaughter are unbelievable. The average viewer would even expect to see violence of this kind. This film is intentionally difficult to watch because it is infinitely depressing to be reminded that mankind can be capable of such evil. The purpose behind these shocking images of bloody torture, rape, and murder teaches that war is often an excuse to entertain man's sordid impulses without reservation. Many believe the true scale of this event has since been minimized. Other nations have done this when they were later embarrassed by their own senseless violence during wartime. The director succeeds in making it impossible for anyone to sweep the atrocities at Nanking under the carpet. An incredible film, for the very brave.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best and most brutal war films ever made!, 28 Sep 2007
By J.M (Cheshire) - See all my reviews
Based on true events..In December 1937 the Japanese army defeated the Chinese and entered the city of Nanking. The horrific events that took place over a period of some weeks became known as the "Rape of Nanking".
Directed by T.F Mou (Men behind the sun) this really is a high quality film. It has brilliant photography and an epic feel but it's not over long. It's very well directed and if you are familiar with the tragic events of the film you will notice how well researched and accurate it is. The film superbly mixes together real footage from the time and it gives you an almost documentary feel as you witness the terrible horrors of the massacre. Don't expect blazing gun battles and cheesy happy outcomes, this is a long way from a Hollywood blockbuster but it's far superior. "Black Sun" is quite often classed in the horror film genre and obviously this film won't be for everyone as it's very graphic and gory but I still strongly recommend this outstanding film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unpleasant viewing., 1 April 2008
By Bobby Smith (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is a hard movie to review. One the one hand it is important to remember the atrocities that the Japanese committed against the Chinese, with Nanking being the most obvious example. However, against that, the viewer must ask themselves the question: is the memory of these victims being tarnished by 'entertainment' being made out of their suffering?
Ultimately, the fact that the Japanese still refuse to acknowledge the full scale of Nanking sends the average viewer into camp one of the above. But only just.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rape of Nanking, 2 Aug 2008
By Antyllus (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
One of the most atrocious depictions of war rape and pillage directed by Mou Tun Fei in 1994. The Nanking Massacre was committed by the Imperial Japanese army against Chinese citizens and refugees during the Second World War. The cruelty of mankind against mankind is horrendous - homo hominem lupus est.

What lends it credence as a shockumentary is the interspersion of real documentary footage and photos of the time. There is no central story line, rather a following development of individual events and characters such as the story of John Rabe John Rabe (November 23, 1882 - January 5, 1950), a German businessman who used his Nazi party membership for humanitarian purposes. In his Nanjing Safety Zone created with other foreigners in Nanking some 200,000 Chinese were sheltered from slaughter during the Nanjing Massacre.

Anyone who makes war a spectacle to view rather than the affront to all that is human should be made to watch this film. This is not a horror movie as it is often classified but certainly a movie about horrors as in
