Synopsis
After a decadent night of clubbing in the Venezuelan city of Caracas, Carla (Mia Maestro) and her fiance, Martin (Jean Paul Leroux), are kidnapped by a trio of violent toughs, one of the legion of Latin American gangs who kidnap wealthy people in order to demand a high ransom. As they wait for Carla's doctor father (Ruben Blades) to produce the money, the thugs drive their victims across a nightmarish, nocturnal landscape of filthy landscapes and untrustworthy characters, beating them and threatening them with more extreme violence--especially when it appears that they just might get a reprieve. A brutal, digital-video adrenaline rush, SECUESTRO EXPRESS is like PULP FICTION and TRAINSPOTTING colliding with Mario Bava's punishing 1974 film, RABID DOGS. First-time director Jonathan Jakubowicz, just 26 years old, has created a thriller ripe with showy technique, which does nothing to diminish the raw power of the proceedings. Along the way, Jakubowicz's message--that a few folks in Caracas have money while most of the city's citizens starve--is driven home by the effective performances of hip-hop stars Carlos Julio Molina, Pedro Berez, and Carlos Madera as the kidnappers. Unfortunately for the city's economy, after seeing this film, few wealthy foreigners are likely to be inspired to buy a ticket to Caracas.

From The Studio
In Caracas, the most dangerous city on earth, kidnapping is a profitable and thriving business where gangs target upper-class citizens whose families are able to pay ransoms quickly and quietly. But when Carla (Maestro) and her fiancé are snatched by three brutal thugs, nothing goes as planned in a deadly game where the players must make every move as if it's their last! Acclaimed by critics for its intense action and gritty realism, don't miss this riveting underworld adventure!

4.0 out of 5 stars Watch out 4x4 Drivers, 17 Nov 2006
By Ted (Camberwell, London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
It may seem a bit drastic, but the brutal kidnap gang depicted Jonathon Jakubowicz's nightmarish thriller would certainly have more success in keeping Gucci loafered, 4x4 drivers off the streets than any Lib Dem policy proposal.
The basic premise of this powerful drama is that 'the haves' of this world would do well not to draw attention to their wealth when they are so outnumbered by the Have Nots. While not quite in the same class as City of God or as thoughtful as Amores Perros, this film is another fine but harrowing example of social disintergration by another seriously talented South American film maker.

5.0 out of 5 stars nightmare comes to caracass in broad daylight, 28 Jan 2009
By Dr. U. L. Khawaja "usman khawaja" (hornchurch ,london) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
the movie begins with a kidnapping at gunpoint and it holds both the characters and audience hostage from that point .
after a night of decadence the couple are kidnapped for ransom by three street goons and this becomes a pretext for the maker to indulge in a deliciously horrid satire on modern culture .
caracas could be chicago or moscow as it is showing police corruption ,the drug trafficking ,social indiffernce and most of all political corruption which leads to anarchy where commoners suffer the most.

the gangsters have more morality then the cops and the cops are more degenerate then the worst terrorists ,in fact they are promoting crime by acting in the fascist beaureacratic stance so common globally .

the couple kidnapped are mia maestro and paul le roux and the subplots are a social comment but it is mostly a humourous satire on the modern day metropolitan culture .

similarities to tarantino movies are abounding but there is enough origonality here to shock stir and provoke with more cocaine and guns around to play a vebezuelan drug roulette ,
and it suceeds in showing the nightmare that modern world has become where a dress wore by a woman once only can cost more then enough to feed a whole family for a year .

in this milieu it is ludicrous not to expect terror and kidnaps with the social failure of a political system which promises a lot and delivers zilch ,
secuestro express both promises and delivers from the beginning to the end with gratuitious violence and ingenious film making with the whole movie shot on streets and real locales in a period of 24 hours which you will remember for a lifetime

3.0 out of 5 stars And I would still go back to Caracas, 25 Jan 2009
A really must see film for anyone who is thinking of going to Venezuela. Really is over the top but as the story is a collage of really stories it gives you an idea of the trouble you can get into. The side of the Bolivian revolution in Venezuela the Chavez government would prefer people not to see.

Excellent, and grimly funny, scenes with the kidnapped boyfriend and his gay drug dealer set in Caracas' famous love hotel Aladdin.
