Oh, the title wasn't quite as apocalyptic as all that: after Farewell To The World, their final concert together as Crowded House, New Zealand brothers Neil and Tim Finn continued to make music, sometimes even together as The Finn Brothers. For fans, though, this 24-song set -- recorded at the Sydney Opera House in front of 100,000 people -- should stand head and shoulders above the band's extensive back catalogue of bootleg live recordings.

The hits, as you might expect, are present -- "Four Seasons In One Day", "Fall At Your Feet", and what's perhaps the group's finest moment, a kaleidoscopic "Pineapple Head". (Less expected is a bit of X-rated onstage banter, which finds drummer Paul Hester claiming to have "deposited a bit of sperm in Sydney town from time to time" -- nice!). Elsewhere, the band show off their admirable chops, "Hole In The River" branching off into the sort of jazzy, prog-tinged instrumental break that'd shame most jam bands. Crowded House made their farewell show a huge, moving, communal event. To a spectacular backdrop - the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge - 100,000 people laughed, cried and sang along. It wasn't just Crowded House's rich catalogue of songs they were celebrating, but the band itself. There was no rock star posturing about Crowded House, these were boys next door with an endearing sense of humour and seductive way with a melody. As good as their studio albums were, to really get the full Crowded House experience, they needed to be seen live. They were funny - sometimes outrageously so, thanks to the unpredictability of the lovely, much-missed drummer Paul Hester - spontaneous and big-hearted, and the music just soared.
Farewell to the World captures all of this, and it's a much better reflection of their live show than the extra disc that once came with the greatest hits collection Recurring Dream. But this was not just any live show, it was an event in which a much loved band bowed out with grace. The band was as moved as the audience, as a small detail in Chris Bourke's book Something So Strong records: Paul Hester was weeping so profusely during Don't Dream It's Over that his tears flowed onto his snare drum. If you haven't read that definitive biography (it's here on Amazon UK) it's the perfect accompaniment to this perfect farewell.

I can say with confidence that this is a great album. I know this because I was there! I was on the steps of the opera house on a Sunday night back in November 1996. Has it really been 10 years!
Every hit is here and more, perhaps more poignant now as Paul Hester is no longer with us.
I will be rushing to buy this and the DVD.
Crowded House were a fantastic band and I count myself very lucky to have been at their "Farewell to the World" concert.

At long last I can relive fantastic concert on CD. I was devastated when Crowded House split and even sadder when dear Paul Hester died after taking his own life, it was such a shame and such a waste of talent. The concert is brilliant and well worth getting whether you have it on VHS, dvd (also available) or not. It is held at Sydney Opera House and all I can say it is just fantastic. I had the pleasure of seeing Crowded House and Neil Finn (solo tour) both at the Brighton Centre, Brighton, UK, in 1994 and 1998. My advice if you like Crowded House and Neil Finn then buy this two CD set. The concert is also available on two DVD as well.
