Rudolf Serkin, the informative liner notes by Peter Feuchtwanger tell us, called her 'the perfect Clara', and other pianists from Dinu Lipatti to Nikita Magaloff were no less outspoken in their praise. This seven-disc 'original masters' set collects some of Clara Haskil's outstanding recordings for the Philips label between 1951 and 1960. It contains a fascinating mix of solo and concerto performances. The first three discs include performances of Scarlatti sonatas, Mozart's sonata in C (K. 330) and Variations on a Theme of Duport, assorted Schumann for solo piano (the Abegg variations, selections from Bunte Blaetter, the Kinder- and Waldszenen), Schubert's final piano sonata and two different recordings of Beethoven's piano sonatas no 17 ('Tempest') and 18 each. The concerto recordings include four Mozart concerti (including no 9. 'Jeunehomme' and no 23 in A) as well as a Mozart rondo. Then there is Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto, the Schumann concerto in A minor, and the Chopin concerto no 2. The final disc also has a performance of de Falla's Noches en los jardinos de Espana.

Haskil is famous for her Mozart and her Schumann. She brings a mixture of grace and authority to these composers that is unique and that is beyond compare: her performance of the Mozart sonata and concerti on this disc are unsurpassed, while her performances of the Kinder- and Waldszenen are as moving as one could wish to hear. The qualities she brings to these composer's can also be heard in the Schubert sonata and the Chopin concerto. But what makes this such an inspiring set is the glimpse that it provides of the other sides of her musicianship. The final movement of Beethoven's Tempest sonata truly simmers under her hands and de Falla's Noches sparkles sensuously.

All in all, I'd rate this as one of the best 'original masters' sets out there. The remasters are excellent and the sound is suprisingly full for recordings from this era. This is priceless in its power to move.
