5.0 out of 5 stars Keep your heads in the clouds.. this is stratospheric, 26 Jul 2006
By Andrew C. Madden "Mad Andy" (London UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Ozric Tentacles have a new line up but Ed Wynne is still heliocentric to the band. And with the departure of Jon, Seaweed and others you would expect the sounds to change, and you're right. It has changed, on the last album there is less percussion and more dependency on synths and computerised sound fx.

With this album, more than the last, the music is more varied and Ed's brilliant guitar playing features more gloriously. This is good, soaring noodling guitars and bubbley jubbley synths, the pounding drums and more integrated sonics make this album superior to their last one. Yes, this is where the new Ozrics have come into their own. Spirals was pretty much a solo effort, and the ozrics are so much better playing and producing as a band.

This album has a varied sound and harks back more to the Ozrics of old, influenced by middle eastern tunes, psychy wierdness and space rock guitars.

A few of the album highlights for me were: "armchair journey" an ambient journey full of birds and twittering creatures, "vedavox" sounding very very middle eastern complete with mandolin like guitar and wobble-boardish wobbles, "disdots" full of guitars sliding all over the place, "splat!" from the chewier school of track deep bass and heavy drums and finally "ping" Ed's guitars going skybound and soaring over lush verdant paradises.

Its a brilliant brilliant album, I love it! So much better than Spirals In Hyperspace ( and that was a good album in its own way). Glorious music - go on give your ears a treat.
Righto. I'm off to the 2006 Pongmaster's ball now, to see the Ozrics play this stuff live, should be a night to remember. All I could wish for is ... maybe a flute bit here and there?

Amazing, mind-blowing journey to the outer realms of reality from the organic chaos of Jelly Lips to the cathartic peak of Splat!, and one of the very best from Ozric(...and I have all their albums). Not much more to say, go and explore!

4.0 out of 5 stars Some interesting stuff, 21 Jan 2007
I disagree with the last reviewer as I feel Spirals In Hyperspace was a better album overall. It was a long album, much longer than I realised but I feel it was more 'epic'.

Oddly enough I tend to love the tracks on this new album that most Ozrics fans don't - the first and last, which I feel are some of the best pieces in any Ozrics catalogue. I wouldn't say it has suffered particularly because of the absence of Seaweed but it just doesn't have that overall 'varied interest' many Ozrics albums have. It's difficult to pin point why one Ozrics album is better than the other - but I suppose that's what makes them so unique.

An excellent album non-the-less and a recommended buy for all Ozrics fans - of course!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Splat! indeed.
Some five years ago I found, in one of the Ozric's discs, a little card requesting titles for future tracks. I entered one titled "Splat!" and, lo, here it is! Read more
