5.0 out of 5 stars Pet Sounds - still the greatest of all time, 19 Aug 2006
By Simon Edwards (Liverpool, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I must admit on hearing that a 40th aniversary Cd was going to find itself into music shops, I was a bit pesimistic as to the result of it. Having fully realised what it is that is being offered to the fans (because in reality the fans are the main market of this particular collection - music-lovers who have never heard the album before are probably going to be more prone to getting the bargain version that is priced at around £5 in the shops), I have come to the decision that this is well worth getting.

While this certain item won't surpass the revolutionary box set that came out ten years ago, for the fans it is still worth getting. Packaged like the remastered 2-disc versions of David Bowie's classic albums, Pet Sounds has been given to us again as a stereo/mono album on one disc and a special DVD on the second disc that includes the making of Pet Sounds and some extra special treats for the hardcore fans a long with a new written booklet that tells the true story of Pet Sounds. That in itself is enough reasons to buy the greatest album of all time.

Of course, Pet Sounds in itself is enough reason to buy this new edition. The album opens up with the fantastic "Wouldn't It Be Nice" which most couples in the world can relate to.

Next is the fantastic "You Still believe In Me" which to this day still sounds like a major achievement in Pop/Rock/Classical music. The way in which Brian Wilson achieves the feeling of it being almost childlike is genius.

"That's Not Me" is next and offers the simple realisation of a man who is leaving home for the first time and making it on his own.

"Don't Talk" is one of the most haunting tracks ever written. The voice and music go together like angels and will almost make your heart beat faster from the emotions of it.

"I'm Waiting For The Day" is one of Brian's most dynamic compsotions that you almost feel as if you are listening to a piece of music from the Royal Albert Hall with vocals on it.

"Let's Go Away For Awhile" is one of the greatest instrumentals ever written and will inspire you and haunt you like no other track ever has.

"Sloop John B." is the Beach Boys attempt at a folk song and was a big major hit in both the US and UK. Never has accappella sounded so great.

"God Only Knows" has been called by many people, including Paul McCartney the most beautiful song ever written and it is. Carl Wilson's vocal has never been topped and the tag at the end from Brian and Bruce is absolutly wonderful - will bring tears to your eyes.

"I Know There's An Answer" is Brian's attempt at Bob Dylan and Brian makes a wonderful go at it, bringing in different styles of harmonica and organ.

"Here Today" is one of the busiest songs on the album and will really get your feet pumping as Mike gives a wonderful lead.

"I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" is Brian's most confessional song and for anyone who has ever felt lost and alone will suddenly feel joy at the fact that they are not alone in the world and that everyone goes through this particular stressful time.

The title track is another instrumental that is a lot busier then the previous instrumental on the album and still wonderful after several listens to put it on repeat.

The last song on the album is "Caroline, No" and to hear Brian sing "Break my heart, I wouldn't want to go and cry. . ." makes the listener themselves cry at how emotional Brian could actually get. Towards the end dogs and trains are heard and this is another sign of Brian Wilson's genius.

To me, this album is the greatest of all time and should always be put on repeated listens. Never has an album come so close to the human spirit and never has one man poured his heart and soul on to a record. I myself am really looking forward to this release and the chance again to welcome back a major masterpiece in a new form that is as wonderful as the day in which it was first released in 1966, forty years ago.
