When I first bought this album in the 80's, it was the only experience I had of PT on his own. The acoustic sound, the feel of the hall and the relationship between Townsend and his audience takes you in person to the concert. His rendition of Put A Spell On You is every bit a match for Screaming J's original licks, and it has the Townsend guitar grooves to gild the lily. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand to attention. This is a must for blues and rock fans alike.

As is the welcome norm with re-issues, this excellent live album from the late 1980s has been re-issued with extra tracks - Magic Bus and Won't Get Fooled Again - and better sound.

PT's excellent big band, including David Gilmour on guitar (!) and Simon Phillips on drums, is on top form and there's not a dud track on this disc. I particularly like Put a Spell on Yuu and After the Fire.

The Who tracks get a new lease of life, too, with Won't Get Fooled Again given a new sound through Peter Hope-Evans' harp playing. Pete's in great voice, too.

Good as this is, it's worth seeking out the video of this show for even more songs, stage patter, truly awful dancing and the David Gilmour number 'Love on the Air.

I remember going to this concert at Brixton during the 80's to see 'Pete' by himself, without the 'orrible 'oo. And it has to be said with a little trepidation. But i was pleasantly suprised and astonished how good he was. The songs were(nearly ) all, obviously, his own, but not sharing them with the Who it was his versions being performed. Pete was on the acoustic guitar all the time, terrified of damaging his hearing any more. So, the 'ellecy' guitar duties were handed over to a certain Mr David Gilmour, who ,i think has a promising career ahead of him. Theres blues and soul tracks as well as Who material. And, i think the only version of him singing his song 'After the fire'.Which Daltrey released. The sleeve proclaims this as a cd produced by popular demand and i can believe it. Good on yer, Pete.
