3.0 out of 5 stars Re: Oasis, 9 Jul 2007
The reviewer that thinks Oasis had anything to do with Madchester needs to go get a clue.

Turning up several years late and making third-rate knock-offs of the works of true geniuses doesn't make you one yourself.

A lot of the tracks on this disk aren't Madchester themselves by a long-stretch but they are all reminiscent of the era. They were all staple play-list material in the pubs and clubs and on Picadilly Radio at the time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not that good really, 18 Jan 2007
I have written a review for a number of these "madchester/baggy" compilations and its not so much as critise what has been included, (though a few are a bit odd) but what is missing.

You see anyone can lay there hands on the Roses, Mondays and New Order tunes. Its songs like Weekender by Flowered Up, or Standing Here by the Mill town Brothers, My Rising Star or Shall We Take a Trip by Northside. that a hard to track down and that give a real flavour to the madchester sound rather than Orbital, or Admakski who you can find on any compilation from the era. I am guessing some of the problem with these bands is ownership of the publishing rights but even so I am sure a better representation of the scene and the bands involved could have been put together.

Take the Smith's, for instance, I love them to bits but they have about as much to do with Madchester as the Nirvana did. So try again Bez. A better compilations for the scene are, Madchester Vol 1 or Weekender, (if they haven't been deleted) whilst neither comprehensively cover the scene completely they do a much better job than this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very... average?, 27 Jun 2006

After seeing the T.V commercial, it seemed the Madchester Anthems looked like a great album. But I was suprised at how average it sounded. Indeed, alot of tunes that really made the 90's are here - Can you dig it, Papua New Guinea, There She Goes, and Blue Monday from '88. Most of the other tunes are hardly what I would call classics or memorable, but at least I wouldnt class the album as bad in anyway, just a little dissapointing. I think rather than going for genuine classics, Bez has gone for the 'sound' of the 90's, but it hasn't paid off.
An average album that had the pontential to be brilliant, for all those who remember the 90's as a great era of music.
Instead, The Hacienda Classics is quite good at a look back to the early 90's dance scene, while their are simply loads of other albums that look at the other genres of 90's music.
