Amazon.co.uk Review
A sadly muddled and unsatisfying film, American Dreamz is beset by an identity crisis it never manages to answer.

On paper, it's promising, if hardly radical. Hugh Grant plays the host of a top-rated American talent show. On his quest for ratings, he casts his net far and wide hunting for hopefuls, bringing in the likes of Mandy Moore as he does so. And a wannabe terrorist too. Which doesn't really make too much sense when you watch it either. Throw in an insecure President of the United States--played by Dennis Quaid--who finds himself, thanks to his key adviser (Willem Dafoe) as a guest judge on the show, and you have something of a mess.

What's most surprising is that behind the camera is Paul Weitz, who's of late built upon his initial success with American Pie and brought us the excellent About A Boy (which again starred Grant), and the woefully-underrated In Good Company (which starred Quaid). Yet he's simply unable to work his magic here, as the film simply fails to gel. As a satire, it's targets are too soft and obvious, as a broad comedy it lacks laughs, and even as a straight hour and a half of easy entertainment, it's far too jumbled to be able to relax and enjoy.

There may be an argument that in the midst of all of this is a decent enough movie struggling to break through. But the point is that it doesn't, and given the calibre and curriculum vitaes of some of those involved, American Dreamz has to be classed as a crushing disappointment. --Simon Brew

Synopsis
In order to improve his declining approval rating, US President Joe Staton is thrust into the limelight as a guest judge on hit reality TV show American Dreamz. Head of State Joe Stanton (Dennis Quaid, In Good Company) is going through a bit of a crisis; he’s worryingly out of touch with current affairs, on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and suffering his worst approval rating ever. If he's to regain any credibility, some serious damage control is needed. Leave it to the wily Chief of Staff (Willem Dafoe, Spiderman), who takes it upon himself to enlist Staton as a guest judge on America’s premier reality TV show American Dreamz. But the show’s vainglorious host Martin Tweed (Hugh Grant, About a Boy, in full-on Simon Cowell mode) has his own ratings to think about and will exploit anyone to get those viewing figures up. This includes selecting a group of especially bizarre hopefuls--even by reality TV standards--including Omer, a show-tune singing would-be terrorist! As the contestants lose all perspective and shamelessly clamber to win first place, a sinister plot to blow up the president on national TV is uncovered. American Dreamz takes a very liberal swipe at society's obsession with pop culture--perceived by some as being symbolic of all that’s ill in the West--and is no less outspoken in its political commentary.

3.0 out of 5 stars Daft but funny satire on American Idol, 5 Sep 2006

I have to confess I enjoyed this - but it's quite a guilty pleasure, as it's hard to find the merit in it.. Everyone seems to be trying hard to lampoon real life. Dennis Quaid IS Pres Bush... Willem Defoe IS Dick Cheney... Hugh Grant IS Simon Cowell... and the humour is mostly found in recognising the lampooning that is going on. However the potential for biting satire is largely thrown away... it's still there, but not so biting (Defoe, at a press conference describes the recent visit from the Russian premier - `The president and Mr. Putin had a nice talk. The president considers him a close friend, while of course deeply mistrusting his undemocratic tendencies.'). This makes for a movie where the characters are for the most part either stupid or unlikable - mostly both.
And yet, when the ingredients are put together and we have a talent show with a failed Arab terrorist who just wants to sing, a budding starlet who will do anything to be famous (even her name is `Kandoo') and the MC is one of the most loathable and self loathing characters in years - the end result is amusing, and even in some cases surprising. But the reliance on current issues means that a year or more from now this movie is already going to look dated..
Think twice before buying, but rent it for a chuckle if you like.

1.0 out of 5 stars Such a let down, 7 Jan 2007
By Andrew Kerr (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I couldn't believe how disappointed I was with this film. The trailer and the casting mislead me in to thinking that it was going to be an upto date cutting edge comedy about a pop idle like show called American Dreamz. Instead I got a film that paints a poor picture of reality television shows. For the first time in my life I have been considering returning the dvd, something I would normally never consider as there is usually something about a film (any film) that I like reguardless of how poor it is. American Dreamz didn't make a great deal of sense to me or the other two people I watched it with. It seems to jump about alot which I can only put down to poor editing. The acting is pretty rubbish too which really surprised me considering. Plus I thought that the ending was just hopeless. I feel that the writers and producers were too keen to finish the script and while they were all brainstorming the ending, somebody said for a joke "Hey what don't we just make him..." and they did. I don't want to disclose the ending just in case anyone actually wants to see the film...cough...for some strange reason. There are alot of good films out there spend you money and time when it is deserved.

1.0 out of 5 stars American Dreamz - with a Zzzzzzzzz, 10 Sep 2007
By CJR (Spain) - See all my reviews
Was told this film was clever and witty and a marvelous satire in which even the songs are hilarious in hitting the mark on American life.... Watched it last night with a friend and i'm sorry to say we both thought it was utter tripe. At the end we just looked at each other in bewilderment and then burst out laughing. Not at the tremendous "wit" you understand, but at the fact we'd actually sat through the whole thing! I kept expecting it to get better but was sorely disappointed. Don't get me wrong, i love comedy and all things daft and ironic, but i just could not get into this at all. I felt the characters lacked depth (which in all fairness may have been the point) and the story line was full of holes. Really disappointing. Sorry.
