3.0 out of 5 stars Good enough..., 2 Jul 2006
By cmdrdeathguts (Plymouth uk) - See all my reviews
After dropping a Seamus Haji track on his last mix CD, Steve Lawler does the only honourable thing and jumps ship toMinistry of Sound. That mix, Lights Out 3, was a bit pants, just a load of grooveless, tuneless electro buzzing and squeaking. This is certainly an improvement, at least.

The first disc of the three is in the same style as LO3, but the tunes have been more carefully picked this time. There is a flow and a build-up to speak of, with the last couple of tracks getting quite intense. Highlight is the opening Deer In The Headlights by Chelonis R Jones, which is thoroughly funky.

Disc 2 moves into more minimal territory, which is hardly brave but the variety is welcome. Monique and a new mix of M.A.N.D.Y.'s Jah keep things interesting. lastly, you get a third mix of leftfield andambient music, which is nice enough, but not particularly surprising beyond the fact that Lawler has so far never indicated an interest beyond the dancefloor.

Basically, the problem with thismix is that it has no unique selling points whatsoever. Everyone's playing electrohouse, and everyone else is playing minimal. it isn't the best mix of its type, and there are better ones being beamed out on internet radio for no money at all. Add in audible timestretching artefacts which just scream 'I've had Ableton for about 2 weeks' and you're left with three enjoyable enough CDs (with no Trentemoller tunes, hurrah!) but no clue why they made it out of the bedroom.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lawler's Back!, 1 Nov 2006
By Mr. Peter T. J. Horam "MR. PT" (Lancaster, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After a time spent in the progressivly more boring prog genre it seems Steve Lawler is back with a more evolved and interesting sound. Whilst it is on the Ministry label, it's not commercial as one might expect. Disc 1 is characterised by melodic electro peaking at Alex Doby's smoking mountain where it takes a darker turn. Disc 2 whilst is anything but 'minimal' as described in the previous review (check out Magda, Richie Hawtin, Luciano for some of that good stuff!). Whilst it is slighly more sparse than the previous disc, is more representative of music Lawler plays in the main room at clubs...think Space. It is perhaps best described as percussive (but more interestingly evolved than his previous work) electro-techno which continues the albums infectious groove. Lawlers mixing whilst not wildy creative in its style, does include his personal edits on some of the tracks do give this mix a 'Lawler' tint. Overall the mixing is 'timed' and programmed to create a continuously groove along his journey. The third disc is a deep and dark after hours mix that creates a relaxed vibe whilst still remaining interesting. This is a solid and interesting return from a legendary DJ/Producer.
