Amazon.co.uk Review

Equal parts JAG and C.S.I. , NCIS does a formidable job of blending relevant military headlines with quirky characters who are tenaciously determined to solve a crime--even if it means having to sleep in the morgue to get a few minutes of shut eye. Created by Donald P. Bellisario (JAG, Quantum Leap), NCIS actually began as a two-part episode of JAG in 2003. Later that year, the drama made its full-season debut on CBS in the States. On this six-disc set, which includes all 23 non-JAG episodes plus optional commentary by Bellisario on the first episode, viewers are introduced to an elite squad of special agents, led by Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon). Gibbs is a hard-nosed investigator who doesn't say much. But when he does, an insult usually comes out of his mouth. He's brilliant when it comes to ferreting out the truth, but he's not savvy enough to figure out how to block his ex-wife's nagging phone calls. Instead, he makes do by destroying his cell phone. Gibbs' team is fleshed out by an eclectic and somewhat eccentric set of colleagues, including medical examiner Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard (David McCallum from The Man from U.N.C.L.E. ), wannabe playboy and former homicide detective Anthony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), forensics expert and resident Goth chick Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), and former Secret Service agent Caitlin Todd (Sasha Alexander).

The murder of a peripheral NCIS agent halfway through the season is a taste of what's to come in future seasons when core characters leave the show (voluntarily or not). But in its first year, the show sets up a strong premise that (while not wholly original) is well executed. One of the more stickling aspects of the show is its reluctance to allow Tony to show signs of maturity. At times, he behaves more like a rambunctious puppy than an ace investigator. --Jae-Ha Kim

Synopsis

Produced by Donald Bellisario (JAG), NCIS follows the workings of investigators at the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Led by the wise Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), a crack investigator with no qualms about bending the rules to find his answers, the team takes on cases involving terrorism, murder, espionage, and international arms smuggling. Gibbs is aided by homicide detective Anthony Dinozzo (Michael Weatherly), forensic scientist Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), medical examiner Dr. Donald 'Ducky' Mallard (David McCallum), and computer expert Timothy McGee (Sean Murray). This collection presents the series' debut season in its entirety.

5.0 out of 5 stars wow - what a find, 17 May 2007

I hadn't seen this series on TV as channel 5 as it is shown on a Friday night and clashes with Sky's coverage of Rugby League. It was my sister who put me on to it, and I have to say it's great.

Had I known that it was a JAG spin off I probably wouldn't have bothered with it. I've tried JAG on a number of occasions since it started and haven't been able to build an attachment. But this series...

Oh how I remember Mark Harman from 240 Robert when I was a kid. He was droolable and he has only improved with age. As for Michael Weatherley ("Eyes Only" from Dark Angel) wow - the only thing I don't like is the female lead. Her attitude to the Dinozzo character sucks, especially considering she's new to the job.

We watched episode one to the end of series one in only 3 days.

Cool forensics, Ducky (Man from Uncle) and Abby (the punk).

An outstanding series - I WILL be purchasing series 2, 3 and 4

On the negative side - as usual we in the UK are region 2, 2 for 2nd class citizens - no extras

5.0 out of 5 stars Out At Last!, 23 Jun 2006
By D. Jenkins "following the sun..." (Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As i found out later this is a spin off series, but its great achievement is disguising that fact from anyone unfamiliar with JAG. It stands on it's own with great storylines, actors and continual suspense. The hinge of the program is Mark Harmon's character Jethro, who heads up the team as an ex sniper and peculiar father figure to the younger member's. Cate, who joins at the beginning of the series, enables the writers to explain the intricacys of NAVY protocal to us as she learns from Jethro and Tony. She is a grounded character and with a background as bodyguard to the president very capable of handling herself, both with the criminals and tony's advances. Tony Denozzo, an established member of NCIS when the series begins has an enjoyable relationship with jethro, who is something of a mentor and disciplinarian, but stands on his own for his undisputed capability despite a somewhat juvenile sense of humor and pursuit of women. The Cast is also blessed with wonderful smaller characters- those who remain for the most part within the confines of NCIS headquarters- 'Ducky' Dr.Mallard, the NCIS coroner, who some may recognise from 'The Man From UNCLE' fame. Is wonderful, and to the credit of the show not completely a typical enlgish character, but one you find endearingly sweet and despite the grusome circumstances you usually encounter him in, a truly appealing character. The Other major character, is the goth lab technician Abby. Always amusing in her scenes, she brings life and humor to a job that has been portrayed in rather a dull light in the past. Tune in just for her outfits! :) As the series progressed i became more and more addicted, not in the most part to the crimes they had to solve- which are always fascinating- but as is the hallmark of any good crime show to the continuing appeal of the characters. Mark Harmon pulls the series together undoubtably, but each of the actors brings something new- a different generational perspective, a different national perspective, a humor and background that is unique in each of them, and makes for a thoroughly watchable and highly, highly recommended show. I'm waiting -not at all patiently- for the next series.

I hadn't seen this series on TV as channel 5 as it is shown on a Friday night and clashes with St Helens RLFC home games and Sky's coverage of Rugby League. It was my sister who put me on to it, and I have to say it's great.

We watched episode one to the end of series one in only 3 days.

Cool forensics, pathologist Ducky played by David McCallum (Man from Uncle) and Abby (the forensic scientist goth) played by Pauley Perrette.

There is also the introduction of tech and newbee Timothy McGee, played by Sean Murray who is the (ex)stepson of NCIS creator Donald P Bellisario. As well as the introduction of the "Gibbs" a particular head slap which has a cult following of its own.

An outstanding series - I WILL be purchasing series 2, 3, 4 and 5.
