Product Description

Description

After overcoming some critical personal shakeups to produce2004's excellent THEY'RE ONLY CHASING SAFETY, Florida's Underoath fulfilled the immense expectations set by that album--to transcend their audience's demands and still uphold their Christian metal roots--with 2006's DEFINE THE GREAT LINE. The Band undertakes this follow-up effort with such unbending ferocity that they leave most of their pop/screamo contemporaries in the dust. Vocalist Spencer Chamberlain removes himself from the sugary trappings of his brethren frontmen, gracing even his melodic passages with the angst and chaos that underline his more lungbusting turns. The band behind him has learned enough lessons from legitimate, vinyl-only, handmade-sleeve '90s screamo to make more learned listeners realize that these guys are as close to the real deal as anyone.Combining bracing melodies with unchecked aggression, Underoath may have made the defining album of the movement with DEFINE THE GREAT LINE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could be the best record yet..., 20 Jun 2006
By Accidents (Cheshire, UK) - See all my reviews
I don't know which underoath line up you prefer, whether it's the original more metal underoath or the new more melodic sound. But I must say that this new album has found the perfect middle ground. The CD opens with a much harder sounding underoath reminiscent of the old sound only with a greater sense of composure, on first hearing "In Regards to Myself" it quickly became one of my favourite songs. The album still retains a large amount of the sound from "They're Only Chasing Safety" but the new record shows a great deal of development, something bands like Funeral for a Friend haven't acheived. It's a record that shows a band that knows exactly where they're going. This a brilliant record and I urge everyone to go out and buy it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can We Give More Than Five Stars?, 29 Jun 2006
By Samuel Simpson "sbds1" (Leicester, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Now this is an album. Each UnderĜath album seems to add a new dimension. Initially they were a band clearly orientated around live performances, which grew into a great studio band as well with 'They're Only Chasing Safety', their second full album, with their new vocalist. Now they have moved even further, the sound before was a mainstream screamo album, now it is a powerful work of art.

Enough of what UnderĜath were, now let's move onto the album specifics. The beginning of the album starts seemingly slowly with electrical build up before kicking into the most intense, fast moving 47 minutes of music that you'll hear in a long time. There is, of course the obligatory break for breath, track five, Salmarnir, which I believe is a Bible Psalm read in Russian. In all truth this is possibly one of the best albums of the year, I'd currently rate it in second of 2006.

Seriously, this album shows UnderĜath have grown, and not grown into a weak sounding wannabe Screamo band, but a snarling beast of a band. Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tells A Story . . . , 30 Jun 2006
By C. Torbet "goldschlager" (Dundee, UK) - See all my reviews

Hmmm, well, where do I start? I obtained this album on the day it was released and have been a fan of the band for many years. Firstly, the band are Solid States' best selling band with over 350 000 copies of They're Only Chasing Safety being sold. Define The Great Line however wont be so successful. The album is very much a tale of two stories. For those who loved the whole Aaron Gillespie contribution of melody and drums on the previous album, i'm sorry to dissapoint you but he features a lot less now. The first five songs have clearly been written by Spencer Chamberlain (Screamy Dude). They are fast paced with a lot of screaming and little Gillespie magic. Salmarnir should be marked as a changing point and is probrably the Great Line which they speak of. Track seven to eleven are clearly Gillespie's input to the album. They are modelled much more on the success of the previous album. Loads of melody catchy guitar and sing along choruses. The final song 'To Whom It May Concern' is a total gem, a bit like Some Seek Forgivness Others Escape it has a slow build up but turns into an imaginitive enthusiastic piece of genuis in true underoath style. Whereas the first five songs should not be overlooked it is almost certainly the case that most fans of T.O.C.S will skip past them after a few listens. All in all though the album is still an underoath album and for that alone it merits 4 stars. T.O.C.S still gets 5 though.
