I think the last reviewer will find that this legendary performance is a semitone higher because that is the way it was written, and that lesser vocal talents could not manage the original key! Sutherland became an overnight star with this 1959 performance at Covent Garden and we are very lucky to have it captured on disc. The sound is poor but I give it 5 stars for the astonishing witness it is to the emergence of 'the voice of the century', captured in the first flush of her vocal prime. This interpretation is dramatically unsurpassed and vocally untouchable by any other recorded artist that we know of. Sutherland's assumption of the role cannot be compared with any other - and here, if proof were needed, is the evidence. Unbelievably glorious!

...unfortunately the whole mad scene is transposed higher by a semitone as a result of bad transferring from the original master-tapes. pity.
