Synopsis

Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) are two brothers with a special talent. Well-versed in the supernatural after their father became convinced that their mother was captured by unholy spirits, Dean and Sam dedicated their young lives to hunting down these otherworldly terrors. But adulthood saw Sam drift away from these preternatural activities, instead choosing to settle down in a life of domestic bliss with his girlfriend. But when the Winchesters' dad goes missing, both Dean and Sam know what they have to do, leading to some epic cross-country trips as the brothers try to find their father. Naturally the ghostly spirits that haunt them throw more than a few obstacles in their way in this first season of episodes from the show.

From The Studio

Bound by tragedy and blood to a dangerous, otherworldly mission, two brothers travel from the Colorado wilderness to the Nebraska farmlands and on to the isolated Wisconsin lakes, encountering creatures that most people believe only exist in folklore, superstition and nightmares. As they follow clues in their father's journal, the brothers realize that he has passed on to them all the knowledge he accumulated during the past 20 years. They take up the mantle of his crusade and crisscross the lonely and mysterious back roads of the country in their '67 Chevy Impala, searching for their missing father--and hunting down every evil supernatural force they encounter along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars a gem of a series , 12 Dec 2007
By Susan Belcher "Su B" (St Helens, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I was put off this series by the ITV tag line "scary just got sexy" (yuk!!! - whoever thought up that nauseating line should have been sacked). Then one night I was flicking through the channels and came across this (it was halfway through the "Bloody Mary" episode. Can you say "Candyman" three times in front of the bathroom mirror in the dark - I was 11 when I saw that film and this version of the avenging mirror ghost caught my attention. And, no, I still won't say "Candyman" three times, whether I'm in front of the mirror or not).

I looked at schedule to see what the programme I had just watched was and was shocked to discover that this enthralling drama was "Supernatural" - the programme with the off-putting tag line. I watched it again on the repeat on the Thursday night, this time from the beginning and I was hooked.

It's a real shame that the father, John Winchester, doesn't appear more in this series, but I live in hopes for series 2.

In the words of a friend of mine, "Winchesters rock!"

5.0 out of 5 stars 22 episodes building up to the last 15 minutes..., 27 May 2006
By Sharron Hather "irismay42" (Nottingham, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
While the first half of Supernatural's first season sets up the characters and their backstory, it is undoubtedly the second half of the season that sees the series really hit its stride. Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, without question the prettiest male double act on TV, continue to surprise with some class acting, both give amazing performances as brothers Dean and Sam, the superb chemistry between the two leads undoubtedly the show's greatest asset.
Added to the mix for five episodes is Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the boys' wayward dad, his presence culminating with the mind-boggling season finale Devil's Trap, the last fifteen minutes of which will have your jaw dropping more times than you can count, while the last 30 seconds will have you grabbing for the rewind button, the words 'That did NOT just happen!' bouncing off the TV screen as you scream at the season's mind-numbing cliffhanger.
While the final two-parter is certainly the season's apex, Shadow sets up these events in nail-biting fashion, while Something Wicked, written by Carnivale's Daniel Knauf, will take you to flashback heaven with a sneaky look at the Winchesters' childhood.
While every episode (with the possible exception of the cringe-making Route 666) is superb, the hilarious Hell House, frighteningly non-supernatural The Benders, the poignant Faith and cracking Provenance are all additional highlights.
Well worth your hard-earned cash!

1.0 out of 5 stars Great show. Poor DVD., 26 Sep 2006
By D. Bannister "gatchaman" (Portsmouth, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Supernatural is a fantastic show. Good looking actors playing great characters in fun, scary stories week in, week out. A bit like X-Files in it's early days (when it was actually good) but with a more hip sensibility. The creator described the characters along the lines of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo on Route 66 (a good analogy for the character dynamic between the two) in the episode commentary and featurette that accompanied this series. Of course, most of you probably wont get to see those, or the deleted scenes and gag reel, because they were on the US DVD, containing the whole series in one set. This release, and the earlier released part 1, has none of these, which is why they should both be avoided like the plague. Maybe then the studios will take the hint and stop fobbing off us Brits with sub-standard releases. If ever there was an advert for multi-region players this DVD is it.
