Synopsis

Life continues to befuddle hapless millionaire (and SEINFELD producer) Larry David in this fifth season of shows. As usual, Larry is joined by his faithful, beleaguered wife, Cheryl (Cheryl Hines), and his manager, Jeff (Jeff Garlin), while regular guests such as Ted Danson, Wanda Sykes, and Richard Lewis are on hand to add to the mayhem. The fun begins with Larry wondering whether he's adopted after his father seems to suggest that he might be, leading to a long-standing subplot that runs through the entire season. But as Larry tries to figure out his past, the present throws innumerable curveballs in his direction, with gay rights activists unhappy with him, a sandwich that bears his name not being quite to his taste, and a Seder set up by Cheryl ending in disaster. While season five will present comfortable and familiar viewing for those already familiar with Larry's antics, there are a few surprises in store, especially as the final episode careers towards an unexpected ending.

DVD Description

He's got it all: a loving wife, good friends, a successful career, a great home..what could possibly go wrong for Larry David? Seinfeld co-creator Larry David stars as himself in this hilarious, off-kilter comedy series that presents an unflinching, self-depreciating depiction of his life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still as funny as ever, 29 May 2007
By Lando Malak "Dok" (Sheffield, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Seeing as Seinfeld is and always will be one of my favourite sitcoms of all time it was impossible for me to ignore this. I always get the feeling that Larry David is one of those rare people that only wants to be part of something if he is 100% sure that it will go down in history as something special and he has definitely succeeded again with this.

Like Seinfeld I only saw the odd episode of this when it was first shown on BBC2 but kept on missing it and wanted to watch it from the beginning in the correct order so I waited for the DVD releases. It was a gamble because I didn't know for sure how funny it was at the time and I only knew Larry David because of Seinfeld, but the gamble paid off big time. One of the things I have always liked about this programme is that I am never sure if Larry is going to come out of each episode smiling or not, it keeps me guessing till the very end. Another great thing is I have mixed feelings about his outspoken opinions as in most of the time I agree with what he says and sympathise with him in awkward situations that he gets himself into and then he will get into another awkward situation where I think he only has himself to blame. Either way it is laugh out loud funny and in my opinion this series is as funny as ever. The only bad thing I can say is that there is only ten episodes a series, but quality will always be better than quantity and when you add them all up there will be at least fifty to laugh at over and over again.

So if you have still not seen this wonderful programme yet and you are not easily offended (as a lot of bad language and difficult subject matters), then you are extremely spoilt as you can watch this and the previous four series (if you can afford to buy them or borrow them) all at once, you lucky people.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the earlier seasons, 1 Aug 2006
By M. D. P. Meechan (Glasgow) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Curb Your Enthusiasm season 5, with the exception of a handful of episodes (such as The Christ Nail), sadly lacks some of the originality associated with the earlier seasons of the show. The performances of the main leads also run the risk of becoming caricatures, with particular reference to Jeff Garlin and Cheryl Hines, who both seem to run on autopilot this season and don't get the opportunity to be funny themselves (they are usually just a stooge for one of Larry's jokes). In the early seasons it was clear that much of the material was unscripted, which made for more believable performances, but by season 5 its as if everyone, including Larry, is working from a script 90% of the time. This is probably not the case, but for this reviewer at least, Curb Your Enthusiasm has lost some of its magic. I hope the show makes a full return to form in its sixth season, as its one of my all-time favourite comedies.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Season Yet?, 8 Feb 2007
By R. Mullaney (Leeds, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Larry David sinks to new lows in season 5 of the funniest comedy ever and had me crying with laughter on more than one occasion. I can't decide if this is the best Curb season yet, it definately has some of the best episodes but is slightly let down by a weak season finale (The End).

Watch and cringe again as Larry befriends a sex offender, adopts a racist dog and accuses residents of his fathers nursing home of rigging the weekly bingo game. Then of course there is the small matter of worming his way into the affections of the head of a kidney-donor consortium in order to move an ailing friend to the top of the list so Larry won't have to donate his own kidney.

Brilliant.
