3.0 out of 5 stars Sin is back but something's missing..., 5 Jul 2006
By London Eskimo (London, UK) - See all my reviews
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
As a fan of the original 'Sin' and 'Wages of Sin' I was quite surprised when I saw that 'Sin Emergence' had come out. This version is not a full game as such but one episode of a hopefully bigger series of episodes in the future. The cheaper price reflects this.

To the game itself, Sin handles quite well as a first person shooter using the 'Half Life 2' engine but the whole experience feels a bit flat. Gone are Blade's one liners, gone are the range of different guns and gone is the story a little. A first episode should grab people so that when the game finishes they can't wait for the next one to come. I'm not saying that the original game was a Shakespearian masterpiece but 'Ritual' really need to sort this one out.

A bit of a headache of the game is waiting for the game to install. If you haven't got an Internet connection then don't bother with this game because you will need to set up a 'Steam account' and download some extra data from the net in order to play the game. For broadband users this is no problem but guess what, I still have a 56k modem and in order to download whatever was needed for the game I had to leave the computer on overnight!

The bottom line is that John Blade is back but wait for the price to drop a little before buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, 20 May 2006
By James P. "MasterChief78" (Buckinghamshire, UK) - See all my reviews
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Got this via Steam on May 10th, and have hardly stopped playing it since! A terriffic blend of all-out action and rewarding interaction and exploration in a first-person shooter, the game uses the Source engine from Half-Life 2 to bring the futuristic city of Freeport to life.

The graphics are bright & superb on my mid-range PC (Athlon 64 3000, 1GB RAM, Geforce 6600GT) and the sound uses echoes and tunnel effects.

There are only 3 weapons in this, the first installment, although all have effective secondary firing modes and plenty of bite. The incendiary grenades are a scream! You can pick up and throw items, turn on taps, and interact in other ways to set off traps on the bad guys, who are interesting and varied, including huge mutant monsters. It's quite a long game and certainly worth the bagain price.

It sort of follows on from the original Sin but apart from being an FPS is nothing like it. It plays like a cross between Deus Ex and Half-Life 2, so if you like either get it now!

2.0 out of 5 stars Fun but too short for the money, 28 May 2006

I completed this game in 4 hours, and for its price tag witrh no multiplayer or additional hooks, there is nothing to keep you coming back for more.

Its like playing a highly polished HL2 Mod, and with more 'episodes' on the way I HOPE they drop the price.

Most annoying aspect of the game was that it installs steam, but this is required (as per HL2) to purchase further 'Episodes'
