4.0 out of 5 stars Curates eggy, 21 Jul 2006

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Difficult to review, this album... The single Happy was one of my favourites of last year... and yes, it's here, complete with bubbling keyboard, chunky drums, funky guitar breaks and sublime vocal sample from Mike Buchanan. This is a future classic piece of fresh modern funk that rightly deserves it status as a surefire dancefloor filler...brilliant!
But it is always worrying when an album compiler puts the big hit as the first track. You wonder if there is anything else left of substance in the rest? Track two was a slight let down for me...very derivative of seventies funk without the necessary to lift it beyond the ordinary. The rather weak vocal delivered by Louise Kerr doesn't quite cut it...forgettably pleasant.
We get to track three, starting with vocodered phrase...leading into funky 80's sounding synth and 808 rhythms... all very Pet Shop Boys or that ilk... but it just doesn't go anywhere. ..just round and round in circles. I am starting to get the feeling that this album is a one hit wonder...
Track four Devil Inside is a real improvement. We move up a gear to this Blaxploitation inspired piece of Shaft-U-Like funk, complete with Lalo Schifrin sample which gives the tune a more mature feel. Good strong vocal by Z-Star adds the necessary sass to lift this to a higher level.

...And then we get to track five: Slowly. Hallelujah! we are back to form. This steamy ballad is a great vehicle for Z-Star to get her teeth into. A slow burner of a tune that really makes a connection. The funky keys bubble under a wash of strings, the chugging drums pushing things along with lazy urgency, and John Barry style strings give it a cinematic feel. "....as we go down ... s l o w l y...." lovely lovely lovely.
Tracks six to nine are pleasantly lightweight fillers. Which bring us to the last track Ego Spiritual. Now I always think that the last track on an album should be one of the best. This one starts well enough. Funky drums and keys compete over synth pads, leading us to rhythmic vocal samples dropped repetitively over various percussion breaks. I wait for the progression, for the thing that lifts the tune up a notch...but it never happens... just a slightly cool tune with a funky lick.
All in all we have an album with three great tunes and a lot of (respectable) fillers. Worth the price of admission for Happy and Slowly, but could have been so much more.
