5.0 out of 5 stars Folk In Heaven (not Hell) , 9 Jul 2007
By N. McCulloch "morphe" (Cheshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This album is brilliant, the varied collection of modern folk/acoustic/psychadelia songs contained within this album is superb. The music battle between Britain / North America (hence the clever title) is a tough one to call, as both sides of the pond have lots of talent to shout about. This isn't a traditional folk type album (no hand on ear stuff hear), it's just an eclectic mix of great songs. Go on buy it you wont be disappointed. NB Its also handy for waving the album cover out of the car window at motorists who cut you up -

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sampler, But Don't Expect Traditional Folk., 7 Mar 2007
By William J. Walker "Billyjay" (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This is a marvellous introduction to the world of modern folk-inspired/Nu/Neo-folk and related music, it is best used as a sampler or guide to the artists featured. I say folk related' because most of the music isn't, strictly speaking, folk at all, so staunch traditionalists should steer well clear. I think the aim was to compile 'music of interest to...' rather than operate within strict categories. Let's face it Sufjan Stevens certainly isn't folk but the track featured(a beautiful song featuring just banjo and voice)should appeal to folk fans).

The album is divided into 2 discs. The first featuring British acts and the second, North American(weirdly the most 'english-folk' on the album is the brilliantly and spooky version of 'Rosemary Lane' by Espers on disc 2). If there is a problem it may be that in trying to encompass so many diverse styles that it loses cohesion.

There are a few tracks present which I thought were poor (of course those may be someone elses favourites) but then it would be nigh on impossible to avoid that with this sort of project.Despite this the album can be a good listen in its own right.

After the initial couple of listens I found I have rarely played the whole thing since, but I have bought several albums on the strengh of tracks on this compilation and they have more than justified the original purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mishmash of US vs UK nouveau sometime psychodelic Folk, 16 Oct 2008
By Man of Kent (Kent, England) - See all my reviews
The idea is UK versus USA, and it is a good one as some UK bands sound like they are from the USA and vice versa, notably the excellent Espers. This is a good taster album and lead me to buy albums by Espers, 18th Day of May and investigate the (frankly bizzarrely funny) Listen with Sarah. Laura Cantrell track is achingly poignant to the point of painfulness, and utterly beautifully delivered. Worth a punt for the Wilds cards mixed in with a few duffs.
p.s.
Parsley, is a herb...
