Product Description

Description

The British electronica artist Toby Marks, who performs under the name Banco De Gaia, has grown increasingly politicized since his mid-1990s album, LAST TRAIN TO LHASA, which drewattention to the Chinese government's oppression of the people of Tibet. His richly layered 2006 series of dance tracks, FAREWELL FERENGISTAN, includes an experimental piece featuring singers from each of the countries taking part in the 2005 G8 economic summit, a computer performing the Elizabethan composer John Dowland's "Flow My Tears", and "White Man's Burden", a lament for the messianic tendencies of some worldleaders.

5.0 out of 5 stars banco comes up trumps!, 14 Jun 2006
By Mr. A. P. Souter "scooter" (Nottingham, Nottinghamshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

I wont go through each track on the album, but will say that each and every track is something really special, and varied too. All the trade-mark banco signatures are here, with fresh sounds, samples, haunting melodies etc. wow! It reminds me of both Last train to Lhasa and Maya - there are even some sleevenotes for most of the tracks that provide a bit of background info on some of the more exoticaly named tracks.
As I write this, I have the last track on the album stuck in my head! This album will, I'm sure, be seen as one of Banco's finest!

4.0 out of 5 stars Back to the old style..., 26 Jun 2006
By Mr. S. D. Williams "sdwill1" (Sandy, beds) - See all my reviews

Fans of Banco de Gaia will recognize this album as typically of his style - thanks goodness.
After the last two, which were more upbeat - having some good dance tracks, this goes back to the more traditional trance style music of which the long term fans will recognize instantly.
It is an album to be considered as a whole - there are no killer tracks like 'Obsidian', 'Seti 1' or 'Tongue in Chic' here, just good methodical music.
That said, it is more consistant throughout than his earlier work, which while excellent, did occassionally seems disjointed.
All in all, an excellent album and difinately not a waste of money.
My only complaint is that it is a bit 4/4

5.0 out of 5 stars Too good, 21 Feb 2007
By OR Williamson "Ollie Williamson" (Bath, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There is quite literally nothing wrong with this album. It is exquisite. From the album images, the track names and the music itself, it is quite possibly the best Banco album yet, and this coming from someone who has them all (10 I think, including best of?).

Signature Banco melodies continue to perculate the tracks (which is in no way a bad thing, it is what Toby Marks excels at); and combined with fantastic beats and breaks (try not to start bouncing round the room to the sublime Ynys Elen, track 2) create wonderful music.

This seems a deeper and more thoughtful album than his last. It resonates with mood and feeling. There is the sorrowfulness and regret indicative of 'Last Train to Lhasa' or 'Izigeh'. There are the Arabic suggestions reminiscent of the fantastic 'Maya'. There's the hope and humour found in 'You are Here'. In fact he has managed to take every one of the best facets from each of his previous albums and knit them together to form an expansive, colourful and beautiful patchwork Banco quilt. It is as I said at the start, quite exquisite.

I would and have recommended this album to all, as I do with Banco albums full stop. Long shall it be in my stereo, making me smile.
