Just receive the Bluray edition. And I was so disappointed to discover how bad is the transfer. A 24P transfer made from a PAL or NTSC video format. Just an awful blow up from a video master. The upscaling is bad. And the transfer from 30fp to 24fp gives you repetitive soft dissolves in between frames and even on each shot to shot cut transitions. I never saw this on a Bluray disc. Even the 2.35 black bars are soft blurred. Do not buy this edition.... Keep your Criterion Edition DVD still the best!

Baron Frankenstein wants to create a super race and to do so he builds a male & female monster, but he makes an error with the male monsters head ands things do not go according to plan.

An incredibly gory retelling of the gothic horror. The gory effects are probably the best aspect of this otherwise bland terror pic, some of the blood & guts are actually quite good, the scene with the Baron and the female monster where he penetrates her aperture is the best in the film, the climax is also a gory highlight. There are however quite a few issues with it, the acting isn't great, Dallesandro & Kier are not bad but most of the others are a struggle, it's quite plot heavy for a gory horror film and this makes it east for your mind to wonder and although this is a Morrissey/Warhol picture it would have been nice for maybe one less shot of Dallesandro's backside. This is not a bad film but my biggest problem with it was just how mediocre it was, as I said there are 2 very decent parts but the rest is just OK at best watchable but utterly, utterly OK.

This review is for the Cinema Cult Australian DVD. This is an absolute gem of a "so bad, it's good" film, full of hilarious dialogue delivered straight-faced in laughter inducing accents, with some terrible effects mixed with some genuinely gruesome scenes. A beautiful yet highly inappropriate score complements the weirdness perfectly, and it features one of the greatest death speeches committed to film. Fans of serious cinema should probably avoid this one, should appeal to cult horror fans and lovers of b-movie type sleaze.
The DVD itself is nothing special, it is region free and as far as I can see, fully uncut, but has no notable extras (photo gallery, screen tests) and the transfer itself is nothing to write home about, scarcely distinguishable from a VHS.

Oh what a gloriously artful satire of grindhouse schlock this is and makes Hammer's output look more like museum pieces in comparison. A fine example of modernist filmmaking with all the madness occurring not losing its appeal due to the fact that you get the feeling that it all has a point. Gore, sex, comedy, atrocious accents, worse foley and yet its all so fun. Udo Kier's a boss in this, even if vowels are an alien concept to him. Everyone else gives complete deadpan performances throughout which i am extremely grateful for as i am a man of kitsch more than camp concerning my acting and besides there is enough visual oddity going on that anything else would be too OTT.

Pop art at its finest

The Australian version is a travesty. For a blu ray the picture quality is dire - no point in anyone upgrading their DVD for this. When I saw the film in the 1980s it was amazing in 3D. Blu Ray 3D now offers that same experience at home. Unfortunately the 3D version is not on this disc. I don't understand when so many rotten 3D films are released in blu ray 3D why this excellent piece of proper 3D remains unreleased anywhere.

This is truly a cult classic of the horror/erotic genre.
Produced by Andy Warhol and starring Udo Kier who has been extremely busy in the last few years (Blade, End of Days etc) it is a different take on the Frankenstein saga. Full of blood and guts and equally full of erotic images it is definitely one for collectors of the genre.
