This genre-bending mix by ivan smagghe (half of black strobe) and dj chloe has eased its way into heavy rotation on my IPOD.

Aptly titled "The Dysfunctional Family: Kill the DJ", this mix certainly dives into some dark minimal tech-house arrangements and plays these off with great effect against some electro-house numbers with wobbly basslines and some odd "breathy" vocal grabs such as in the fidjety "Close Your Eyes" and the slightly darker "Grace (Anxiety)." For me, this mix is ideal for headphone listening (not for parties) when you want to escape to somewhere a bit unusual and dark.

However, the thing that appeals most to me about this mix (which of course didn't appeal at all on the first listen!) is its subtle but effective switches in genre and mood to move from dark, minimal ploddy numbers to almost euphoric synth build-ups before switching tempo again, and dropping some catchy electro-house hooks.

If you like blackstrobe or smagghe's fabric CD, or are up for something a liitle dark but very different, try it out.
