5.0 out of 5 stars Just amazing, 8 Oct 2007
After going on a random search for new Progressive Rock bands to listen to I stumbled upon this Sylvan album and after listening to it can safely say it's the best thing I've heard in absolutely ages.

This is isn't an album to be taken a track at a time but instead enjoyed as a whole. The subject matter is particularly emotionally involved as it centres on the story of a father who finds the diary of his recently deceased suicidal daughter and discovers more about her through this diary.

The emotional slant that this story gives to the music couldn't be better expressed as I have no shame in saying this is one of the only albums to ever have me close to tears upon listening to it. It's beautifully put together with the perfect musical arc in terms of slow and thoughtful to faster and heavier songs with each one crafted brilliantly to express the emotion of the story. Not only that, the melody lines are second to none and certain songs will be stuck in your head for a long time to come, not to mention make your hairs stand on end. The fact that the band is German yet singing in English (this guy has one of the best voices I've heard in ages) only adds to the unique feel it has to anything else similar I've heard.

I couldn't recommend this album any more and it will definitely be one of my favourite albums of all time. Best taken in one 70 minute sitting this album can enjoyed over and over again for the brilliant piece of craftsmanship that it is. This album is the proof of how music can affect and portray emotion. Simply brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Prog album of 2006, 23 Jun 2007
By har (dundee, scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Posthumous Silence (Audio CD)
I am surprised no one has reviewed this prog rock masterpiece yet!

Sylvan are a German prog band in the symphonic prog genre. However the music also ranges through classic rock to prog metal, is always melody orientated with brilliant musicianship and writing. Keyboard and guitar orientated with strong melodies, vocals and lyrics.

To put it bluntly this concept album is absolutely astoundingly brilliant! From the first time you hear this 70 minute epic it will blow you away. There are echoes of Genesis, Floyd blended with the newer styles of prog like Riverside and Porcupine Tree, so much to listen to its unreal!

In particular the tracks Pane of Truth, A Kind of Eden and Posthumous Silence are works of immense beauty and deeply moving. Haunting, thought provoking stuff.

I have also just got their new album Presets whish is EVEN better if thats possible.

SYLVAN - brilliant, astounding, life changing music :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars vocalist performance out of this world, 16 Oct 2009
By Deven Gadula (san francisco, ca, united states) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you have listened to this album already than you know how incredibly special it is. For many people this is their all time favorite progressive concept album. It is like a mixture of Supertramp's Even In The Quietest Moments with Rush's Hemisphere with some elements of Peter Gabriel's The Last Temptation Of Christ, full of mixed emotions performed perfectly. Marco Gluhmann is one of the best vocalists of the present generation and his live performance is worth experiencing even if you don't go to concerts anymore. The structure of this album is extremely complex and Marco lets his voice lead the music from level to level. The samples are just perfectly put together. As far as best songs here, I would recommend listening to the entire album but I guess you do get a good taste of it by listening to songs 1 through 5. Besides these 5, number 11 Answer To Life and as so often with Sylvan, their last and title song Posthumous Silence is incredible. Please, do not let Posthumous Silence be some judging mark for Sylvan's other albums. There are great songs on both Presets and Force Of Gravity. Another album without a weak song on it may be hard for them to compose, and quite frankly, as long as they keep on creating beautiful songs, I don't mind.
