2 great ppv's, 3 Jun 2006
...in my opinion King of the Ring 1997 is underated.
a brilliant KOTR final with the game coming out on top after a brutal match with Mick Foley, the title match with the Undertaker fighting Ron Simmons (Farooq) is also very unexpected and enjoyable.
King of the Ring 1998 is probobly remembered most for the Hell in a Cell (Undertaker Vs Mankind) and the 1st Blood WWF title
match (Kane Vs Stone Cold (C)), but it features the brilliant Ken Shamrock winning the tournament which makes it for me as well as the double main event.
Kane and Undertaker are my two favourite wrestlers so i was pleased with this event.

King Of The Ring 1997:
(1) KOTR Semi Final
Ahmed Johnson vs Hunter Hearst Helmsley w/ Chyna
Seemed like it would make a good match and failed miserably, and also was incredibly short. What ever did happen to Ahmed anyway? I've seen worse matches though. 2.5/10
(2) KOTR Semi Final
Mankind vs Jerry "The King" Lawler
I thought this match was very well done, especially since "The King" was in it - you can't say a good thing about most of his matches. Mankind gets a battering basically and does a wicked finish. This was an OK match. 3.5/10
(3) Crush vs Goldust
I was reading something instead of watching this because it bored me a lot. The Nation of Domination were pretty cool. This PPV brings back a lot of memorys :D Although I have memories, I wish for this not to be one. Worse than the first match. 1.5/10
(4) LOD & Sycho Sid vs The Hart Foundation
Basic six man tag match which was entertaining in parts but just felt like a six man tag I guess. It was a huge letdown to the build up though, and Sid bodged up the finish and made it look idiotic. His entrance was stupid anyway. 3.5/10
(5) KOTR Final
Mankind vs Hunter Hearst Helmsley
This match was literally brutal. A huge suprise how good it actually was with Foley taking bumps left and right through tables and railings and sceptors. I really liked the match though and it bumped up the PPV in my opinion. Not a classic but worth watching. 5.5/10
(6) Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Shawn Michaels
This match was well good, maybe not as good as what would be their Wrestlemania XIV match, but it was entertaining none the less with a really suprising ending which basically left all of us in the dark (I don't want to spoil anything). Very good match though. 6.5/10
(7) WWF/E Championship
The Undertaker (c) vs Faarooq
This match was better than I expected, but I wasn't expecting much to begin with though. The NOD were there to make the match gel better and Faarooq put on a good showing, and The Undertaker did as always. All I'm saying is 1 - Paul Bearer Sucks and 2 - Ahmed Johnson sucks. HBK vs Austin should have been main event though. 5/10
King Of The Ring 1998:
I would just like to say that this is the greatest thing that silver vision has ever done. There must have been a loophole somewhere because this copy retains all of the WWF "Scratch" logos so what you have is a perfect copy of KOTR 1998. It's brilliant!
(1) Headbangers & Taka Michinoku vs Kaientai
Usual first match rushed six man tag. Entertaining in parts though so it was alright. Not the best ever way to kick off a PPV but it did the job. 2/10
(2) KOTR Semi Final
JJ vs Ken Shamrock
Another short semi final match, but this one was better and JJ's manager is well funny. Ken Shamrock kicks arse though. Did the job it was meant to. 3/10
(3) Dan Severn vs The Rock
Another rush job which involves stupid run-ins from the Rocky NOD. Faarooq was way better. Dan Severn was a serious player, then they made him look like a chump. No point in watching it again. 2.5/10
(4) Too Much vs Al Snow w/ Head
I don't want to give away spoilers in this match but the offical is just too unfair for Al Snow (you'll know what I mean) and the finish was funny once you realised what it was. I bet no-one had a clue in the arena. This match was very long but it's cool seeing a young "Too Hot" Scott Taylor and stuff. Al Snow stole the match though because he is brilliant in his role as the lunatic. This match wasn't very good, as it wasn't meant to be anyway. I'll be generous though for comic value - 4/10
(5) X-Pac vs Owen Hart
I friggin' hate X Pac. Owen had the match won like a 100 times, be it if Mr I-Can't-Wrestle Mark Henry inteferes or not. The match was OK and I guess it was needed for storyline purposes. 4.5/10
(6) WWF/E Tag Team Championship
New Age Outlaws (c) vs The New Midnight Express
I've Got Two Words For Ya: ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz 1.5/10
(7) KOTR Final
Ken Shamrock vs The Rock
Now the PPV kicks off properly. Not as good as Wrestlemania XIV but good none the less and funny commentary from HHH at ringside. Good match though like most KOTR finals, and it is watchable again I guess. Better stick with Mania XIV though. 6/10
(8) Hell In A Cell
The Undertaker vs Mankind
You've all seen it. You all know everything about it. It dosen't take away the fact that every time you watch it you do get goosebumps and you are amazed. What a Hell In A Cell though. Just a massive, massive, massive car crash of a match though, in a good way. It's much better on this DVD though because unlike the Tombstone boxset or Mick Foley DVD's, theres not blurring everywhere! 9/10 This is a classic.
(9) First Blood For WWF/E Championship
Stone Cold Steve Austin (c) vs Kane
How the hell did Stone Cold think he was going to win? The only skin revealed of Kane's was his hand. What an extreme match though and with the Hell in a Cell in play for no authorised reason, it made it more smash mouth and brutal. Shame you can see when Austin blades himself though. Chaotic during the end though. The Undertaker must've suffered brain damage in his last match when he poured petrol over the ref. Not a classic but I could watch this again because it was a genius match. How could Kane lose? 7/10
Ok, ok. I've given most of the matches poor ratings, but it dosen't phase the fact that these were bad PPV's because they weren't. They're very good, and of course not every match can be a 5 star Kurt Angle classic. This is needed for every WWE fan. Unmissable. Great value as always with Tagged Classics DVDs aswell.

A Worthy Royal Offering From WWE...., 31 May 2006
The highly popular "Tagged Classics" series moves into the "Attitude Era" with these two PPV offerings from 97' and 98'.
Both events are dubbed "King Of The Ring" and feature the once-prestigious single elimination tournament to determine the true "King" of (at the time) the World Wrestling Federation.
These events took place back during a time where the "King Of The Ring" tournament was more than just an attempt to garner high ratings for Smackdown!. It was an PPV extravaganza in its own right.
King Of The Ring 97' obviously pays homage to the roots and the unique nature of the event (the classic "royal subject"-guarded "sliding doors" are on display in the entranceway throughought the show), although old-school fans may be disappointed to see the tournament be joined "in progress" on this DVD, with the quarter final matches already being contested on the pre-PPV Raw. That said, all of the KOTR tournament matches are very good, especially the brutal final between HHH and Mankind.
Non-tournament matches include a surprisingly interesting bout between Goldust and Crush, a better-than-expected WWF Title Match between Undertaker and Farooq and a show-stealing encounter between Stone Cold and Shawn Michaels (that is almost ruined by it's incredibly cheap conclusion).
Sadly, the much-hyped 6-Man Tag between The Hart Foundation and LOD & Sid is a disappointment, but considering the strength of the other matches, this is a minor glitch on an otherwise near spotless card of action.
KOTR 98' only stands out for the violent double-main event that it's built around. On a show that features Mankind getting thrown off the top of the Hell In A Cell roof and through an announce table, as well as his descent into a sea of thumb-tacks, the KOTR tournament is almost rendered worthless (not that that matches themselves are up to much, anyway).
In actual fact, the supporting matches are a lot better (only The New Age Outlaws VS The New Midnight Express is truly horrible). As for the main events (Hell In A Cell, First Blood WWF Title Match), Mick Foley's one-man stunt-show will shock and probably sicken you, but as an actual match, his scuffle with Undertaker is quite poor. Much better is Stone Cold's First Blood Match with Kane, which features great interference from Undertaker.
Overall, this is another fine offering from the "Tagged Classics" series, although anyone one looking for a more "wrestling"-based show may be more impressed by the lesser-known KOTR 97', rather than the infamous (but very typical of "WWF Attitude" with regards to match-quality and booking) KOTR 98'.
