Album Description
Although they concentrated the majority of their time on ancient theatre musical recitation, the Florentine intellectuals and musicians from the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century who shaped western musical history also devoted much time to the writing of music for solo voice. These so-called arias from composers like Guilio Caccini and Claudio Monteverdi became very popular throughout Europe.
The Italian tenor William Mateuzzi , who's voice is characterised by an extremely high timbre, has specialised on the performance of the early canto art repertoire. Together with the lute player Huber Hoffmann and the Münchner Barocksolisten conducted by Hans Ludwig Hirsch he here presents selected "jewels" from the period when these songs were the regular diet of musical life. Included are many well-known arias like Caccini's "Amarilli mia bella" as well as Robert Jones' "Ite caldi sospiri".
