Polish Conductor, Marek Janowski and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra from the mid-1980's. Priceless. Both Conductor and Orchestra are on top form and the recording is as good in Liverpool's Art Deco Philharmonic Hall. These performances are direct and straight to the point, with (what some might think) are rather brisk speeds. But the quality of the playing is astounding and still sounds so well from (originally ASV's) the 1980's accoustics and recording techniques. All the Symphonies are well played (but the 4th is particularly well done) and the Haydn Variations and Overtures (Tragic & Academic Festival) are excellent. A true gift to anyone who loves Brahms, Romantic repetoire and a well disciplined Conductor in charge of and working in tandem with a highly appreciative Orchestra. Janowski & the RLPO play and sound like they enjoy and more importantly, love this music. A joy. I recommend it to everyone.
