This is, quite simply, a beautiful CD.

It opens and closes with a violin concerto by two of the giants of baroque music, Vivaldi and Tartini. Sandwiched in between are six other works by lesser known composers. All the music was collected by a nobleman, Baron Charles De Geer, who owned the estate of Leufsta in Sweden in the eighteenth century, and placed in his library - hence the title of the disc.

The pieces are all a joy to listen to and part of what makes the disc such a treat is the varied instruments used in each piece so, for example, the initial violin concerto is followed by a piece played on flute and harpsichord and this by a Sonata for cello and harpischord. In consequence, there is no risk of getting bored, as sometimes happens, when the whole disc is of, say, violin concertos or harpischord music.

The Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble have a quite hard edged sound which I find very attractive and part of the joy is hearing Nils-Erik Sparf playing as violin soloist in the violin concertos and in partnership with another violinist in a sonata for two violins and basso continuo. Way back in 1984, Mr Sparf was the soloist in a much praised recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons which the Drottningholm's made (BIS CD-275)and which remains my favourite interpretation and it was great to hear him in action on the Leufsta disc.

The recorded sound is beyond reproach. If you like baroque music, I urge you to buy and enjoy this disc.
