5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Stanford from Chandos, 18 May 2006
By Geoffrey Bellamy "Sambo-Geoff" (Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The first piece on the cd is the setting of 5 poems by Henry Newbold, the "Songs of the Fleet". This performance alone is worth the price of the disk. Gerald Finley is a stunning soloist, a beautifully produced voice, even throughout the range, and right for this quintessentially-British music. The chorus and orchestra are excellent and the recording is rich, clear and full - ideal qualities for music of this type. The level on the stereo layer is on the low side, but, with the volume turned up, it sounds beautiful and powerful.
This setting is a masterpiece, only those allergic to British music will not be deeply moved by it. The "Revenge" setting is well performed, in spite of the odd moment of strain among some of the chorus. "The Songs of the Sea" are the equal of any other recording, with Finley, again, a wonderful soloist.
That Stanford is a seriously under-rated composer is well- known among those who love his music. This cd should do lots to put this situation right, it should sell in large numbers and deserves to do so.
Sit down, turn up the wick, look at the words and bathe in a glorious musical experience, then tell your friends to go out and buy this cd, that they may do the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime, 17 Sep 2008
I'm not a fan of this type of music usually but I have to say, this wonderful cd has completely taken me by surprise. I read a magazine review praising it and thought "I'll give it a try". The first track on the cd will blow you away. The whole first cycle will amaze you. It is so beautifully sung. Stanford has written some wonderful music here but Hickox and co have taken it to another level. "Songs of the Fleet" and "Songs of the Sea" are magnificent on this cd and I doubt there will ever be a recording this good again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated composer, 23 Aug 2009
By Mr. M. Parker "Bluegrasser" (Farnborough, Hampshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Stanford is a hugely negelcted composer in Britain and worldwide: his style of composition id not fashionable - he actually writes tunes! This is perhaps the most unfashionable sort of composition but a delight to hear. Well written songs, clearly sung by a first rate voice and with the orchestral accompaniement handled to perfection. This is an ideal CD for listening at the end of a day when you deapair of our corrupt politicians and over-paid media "personalities", recollecting a better time. A performance that should form part of anyone who loves British music - indeed, "good" music without any other qualification.
