3.0 out of 5 stars A good attempt but not his natural style...., 17 Dec 2006
By Ian "northstaffsmusicfan" (Stoke-on-Trent, UK) - See all my reviews
My first Alagna purchase which I made around the same time that I brought Florez's Una Furtiva Lagrima. Bad move.

Roberto has a bigger, heavier touch that some describe as heroic. This does not lend itself to the delicate touches required for Bel Canto singing.

He's made a very credible attempt and he has a marvellous voice but I've been spoilt by the man from Peru.

I was really looking forward to tracks 18-20, part of the usual selection from La fille du Regiment. Alagna delivers the infamous high C's by climbing up to them, rather than nailing them.( Florez's delivers them as if simply plucking a string by comparison.)

I enjoyed his duet with his wife on A te, o cara immensely though - different style altogether.

It's horses for courses I know, but for my money, if you want bel canto, get Florez. If you want heroics try this one.

I'll certainly be keeping hold of this and would say buy with an open mind. Good recording quality but square peg round hole maybe ?
