Product Description

Thurston Moore, Sonic Youth

Clearly the best band the UK has produced in a while.

Classic Rock, June 2006

Nowhere ties together several disenfranchised and distinctly melancholic strands, including blues, punk, alternative rock and even gospel.

5.0 out of 5 stars no , there isnt any justice, 9 Aug 2007

saw this band by chance a few years back supporting the molten fury of blue cheer down at the borderline. they strolled onstage looking like a bunch of architects or something. we kinda looked at them with raised eyebrows wondering what the hell they were doing on a bill with the cheer, then they kicked off, and....they kicked our asses! not metal for sure, not even rock really. a kinda twisted version of blues/folk and something else not on the radar. but songs people, SONGS! remember? when songs used to have soul and passion and meaning? lyrics and structures that SAID something? like back in the good old days? well, this band had them! they got a standing ovation that night, and rightly so. they oozed class and charisma and talent. as for me, i went and got the album immediately from their guy at the merch stall. got it home and played it to death. i say it again, great songs, great little band. very different. but of course, they aint gonna get anywhere are they? we dont need true talent like this when we,ve got pete docherty eh?!! and the fratellis? and katie melua? and razorlight? you know, REAL talent? course we dont! we need take that! the spice girls reunion! yeah c'mon mr cowell, give us some more REAL stars. let bands like this gather dust and fall into obscurity like all the quality acts do nowadays. aint that the new order of things?

buy this album, help this band. enhance your life

4.0 out of 5 stars Early contender for Mercury music prize (if any justice), 10 April 2006
These guys are like nothing you have heard. This is the blues you seek if you like gravel strained vocal sounds (imagine Eddie Vedder or Ben from GOMEZ after a few more malboros and whiskeys) It definately grows on you. I got my album early from riverside records. Choice tunes for me are the catchy zombified (with its bouncy looping sound) and the anthemic MILE OUT OF TOWN.
If your a punk fan, you too will enjoy this, especially Paper houses, as hard as any grunge wanabee sounds today. Not perfect, but way up there (where is EASY STREET? hopefully on next album which is in production now)

4.0 out of 5 stars (Not) just the Blues, 10 Aug 2009
This is a good CD for all the reasons other reviewers have identified, but there's also something else going on that I think they missed. Maybe it's in part to do with the strength of the song-writing (which really is as good as it gets with this kind of observational Blues-based music), but I think its also to do with the sense of a band who are clearly totally comfortable with what they are doing musically and give themselves the space to do what they do really well. If you listen to the way drummer gives a slightly understated but wonderfully crisp, clear edge to so many of the songs rather than going hell for leather to fill all the available space - and this goes for the playing overall - you'll get a sense of what I mean. It's not a perfect record - Billboard Queen just doesn't work (for me) and both Zombified and Sheol Station are rather too long and feel padded out. But tracks like Desert Rose and Stump Jon and the Owl more than make up for this.
