This album is not as immediate as other Slaid Cleaves albums and is definitely a "grower". If I had reviewed this album on the first couple of listens I'd have written that it was disappointing and that the only great tracks were "Oh Roberta" and "Deeper Shade of Blue". having now played it for several weeks I have realised that this album of a collection of singer-songwriters that Slaid Cleaves regards highly is a superb album with excellent production from Rod Picott. Each track stands on it's own merits and needs to be listened to carefully. There are some superb songwriters around and Slaid proves it by choosing an album to showcase the songs. From the opening track "Devil's Lullaby", to the superb lament to the poet "Everette", and the great storttelling of "Millionaire", this is a great slbum to cherish and keep revisiting to keep changing favourite track after each listen. Thanks Slaid for introducing other great singer-songwriters to my limited knowledge bank!
