5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, `new' requiem `discovered', 31 Dec 2008
By Charles Voogd (Underwaterland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In 2008 I was surprised by two recordings of Requiems I'd never heard before. The first one - A World Requiem - is by the Englishman John Foulds on a much anticipated Chandos release which got a lot of publicity (and sales I hope).
The second one is by the Danish composer Asger Hamerik, here reviewed.
I was stunned by the quality of this music!! It didn't get as much attention as the Chandos but it certainly needs to. If, after hearing Verdi, Berlioz and Dvorak's Requiems, you're in for a treat, BUY THIS ONE.
The orchestral writing is superb, in the Requiem as well in the 7th Symphony (`The Choral') there's much late romanticism to be enjoyed. Especially the Dies Irae is stunning. First you think `hey, there's Verdi' because the trumpets when the Tuba Mirum sounds are nearly the same (in sound, in key) but after the first two measures Hamerik gives this familiar tune a twist of his own, beautiful!!!
The performance and presentation are great. The recording quality too, much of space, you've to turn the volume up a little bit more to enjoy the riches of the orchestral and choral writing. Probably this Dies Irae will blaze you out of your chair, no problem, your neighbours will love it too.
