5.0 out of 5 stars Ormandy's Robust & Vibrant 10th, 31 Mar 2007
By Scriabinmahler (Cambridge UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)

After more than four decades, Ormandy's 1965 recording of Mahler/Cooke 10th has no rival yet in its intensity and depth, and it really shows how one-dimensional and cold currently available recordings are under conductors alive today who tend to play Mahler's music, especially the 10th, with critical and analytic mind.

Ormandy's reading is deeply felt and richly expressive with each part of the orchestra vividly expressed. The first movement is very fast with strong forward momentum creating amazingly vibrant force in the music. The three middle movements are the most energetic and robust I've ever listened to. The last movement is very powerful and profound, next only to Mark Wigglesworth's live account (BBC Music Magazine CD). Remastered sound is too bright, but advantage is the clarity of wind instruments.
