Product Description

Product Description

Horror based on the 1980 John Carpenter movie. Exactly one hundred years ago, off the rocky shore of an isolated Northern California town, a ship of lepers seeking refuge is betrayed by the town's founding fathers and burned, killing everyone aboard. Now the ghosts of the long-dead mariners have returned from their watery graves to exact revenge. Shrouded within a supernatural fog, the ghosts trap the residents of the remote community, intent on seeking out the descendants of those who founded the town, and killing anyone who stands in their murderous path.

From Amazon.co.uk

As remakes go, The Fog has some grisly deaths that gore-mongers will appreciate, and star billing for Tom Welling is guaranteed to attract younger views and Smallville fans; however, the movie will have most horror buffs thinking fondly of John Carpenter's original. A combination of ghost story and slasher thriller, it's a typical example of why remakes are a risky endeavor, especially since the 1980 film does not rank with Carpenter's best. This time, residents of the seaside community of Antonio Island, Oregon, are falling prey to deadly specters that emerge from a spooky fog and are seeking revenge for one of the town's darkest secrets. As the body count rises, Selma Blair livens up this otherwise lukewarm horror pic in the role originated by Adrienne Barbeau, and genre buffs will enjoy in-jokes that refer to the original film and Carpenter's career in general (including one character named "Nick Castle," a reference to one of Carpenter's closest collaborators and fellow directors). Unfortunately, the film's also lost in its own fog of narrative confusion and lack of casting chemistry, but that shouldn't stop die-hard horror fans from checking it out. --Jeff Shannon

Not exactly a brilliant film. More atmosphere in a vacuum and more tension in a piece of wet tissue paper!

Terrible casting, Selma Blair is no Stevie Wayne and Tom Welling is as wooden as ever.

I know we should not compare original versions to remakes/re-imaged versions, but everybody does; and I'm not exception.

What on earth was Debra Hill, God rest her soul, thinking of when she made this? Why mess about with a classic? Apart from a few decent moments, such as wet footprints on the ceiling and the knife in the eye (twice); it really does not have a lot to offer. At least it’s not a scene for scene remake. Even taking it on its own merit, it is a bad film.

Stevie Wayne survives a car crash, that if it would have been any other character would be dead. Even the rest of the main actors survive a head on crash whilst not wearing seatbelts!

As for the ending, give me Father Malone’s decapitation any day.

I always watch the same 3 films on Halloween: - Original JC Halloween, Halloween III (probably JC’s best work) and the original version of The Fog. This version will NEVER replace the original on my list so long as I am breathing.

Thank God I only paid £1.27 (Inc P+P).

I just pray that no-one makes a remake of Halloween III.

Is it possible for fans of the John Carpenter original to be objective with this remake? Is it possible for a modern audience fed on Gorno and Slice Dice horror genres to be objective also?

Well I like to think that as a man in middle age I can be very objective and rate the film accordingly, so with that in mind I happily admit to being a member of both the above groups I have mentioned. This smacked of a bad idea when it was first mooted but it came as no surprise to anyone who can see that mainstream cinema had at this time in film history simply run out of great ideas for movies. This is real bad and I avoided it for so long, but the fact that his royal highness John Carpenter was lending his name to the project always kept me interested, it was the itch I was destined to scratch at some point.

It's poorly directed, badly acted, in fact there is a scene with four people on a boat (two of each sex) that is so badly acted you would be surprised if these actors ever worked again! The pic is devoid of suspense, jump shocks and worst of all, an ending that is as dreary as it is insulting. I give it 2/10 for the sound mix only. An awful abomination.

This 2005 supernatural revenge horror thriller is a reworking of the 1980 movie and follows much the same plot but with some slight differences. A strange fog descends on a sleepy island as the centenary celebrations are about to take place. But inside the fog is a supernatural menace that threatens all, including their beliefs.
This version attempts to address the perceived flaws in the original and dives straight in with the undead playing a far more active role and explains the backstory much earlier and clearer. It’s also not afraid to throw in plenty of fiery deaths and has a lot more gore than the original, but it lacks the tension and atmosphere being more ‘modern’ in its approach and tends to come across as more made for TV. There’s also a lack of chemistry between the two leads who seemed unconvincing and I thought Selma Blair was massively underused as she always makes a good, naive victim –opportunity lost.
Despite everything I actually liked this version as it was entertaining and never slow and still deserves a ****.

As a fan of the Fog I was intersted in what original director John Carpenter and producer the late Debra Hill were doing re-making their own film. What a mess of a movie. In the original Adrienne Barbeau is excellent as the single mum/radio station owner. Jamie Lee Curtis is well cast as is her mother Janet Leigh. The cast in this mess look like teen Baywatch rejects. The music in the original by Carpenter himself brought suspense, tension and a murky sense of forboding. This nonsense is like a pop promo gone wrong.Avoid this film like the plague.I agree with the other reviewer who was reluctant to give this film one star.

firstly i have to say although i'm a huge fan of Carpenter i always felt The fog was never one of his better films, i could never quite put my finger on it but it lacked something compared to Halloween which in my mind is a complete classic.
Having said that i have always enjoyed the fog and was interested to see what they would come up with for a remake considering the advances that have been made in filming and special effects. I also noted that both Debra Hill and John Carpenter had produced this version so figured maybe they had some great new ideas to bring to the story.
I couldnt have been more wrong, this is a weak and uninspired film which in many places makes no sense at all, plot holes everywhere, the special effects are better suited to sunday evening doctor who for the kids and suspense ????? there is none , even the walking dead scene in the morgue is laughable. You keep watching in the hopes maybe it will improve as some films do but in fact it just gets worse and time seems to drag by. you feel nothing for the main characters and dont really end up bothered when they die, the only good piece of acting in the entire film to my mind is the young boy running from the fog across the beach.
all in all its an awful film, a waste of money and a waste of time
