Product Description
Award-winning director FATIH AKIN returns from the success of HEAD-ON with a musical odyssey and, along with ALEXANDER HACKE (from EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN), takes us on a unique journey through Istanbul, looking at the vibrant musical scene which includes traditional Turkish music along with rock and hip-hop. CROSSING THE BRIDGE: THE SOUND OF ISTANBUL is an absorbing portrait of the city that bridges Europe and Asia and continues the themes raised in Head-On by challenging notions of east and west. Hacke captures a variety of sounds on his magic mike and returns home with a musical treasure in his baggage that is the sound of Istanbul. See and listen to the neo-psychedelic band BABA ZULU, fusion DJs ORIENT EXPRESSIONS, rock groups DUMAN and REPLIKAS, Tukey's answer to Public Enemy CEZA, renowned clarinetist SELIM SESLER, the 'Elvis of Arabesque' ORHAN GENCEBAY, and legendary divas MÜZEYYEN SENAR and SEZEN AKSU, and more. Double Disc Edition with OST CD

Synopsis
A documentary portraying the sights and sounds of the city that bridges Europe and Asia. Experience the extraordinary mix of dialects, music and cultures as East meets West.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing,captavating stuff, 22 Jul 2006
By A. Randell "Ady Random" (oxfordshire,uk) - See all my reviews

not often do you get to see a documentry these days which has nothing to do with politics or fluffy animals and make you feel good about yourself and open your mind more, well thats what i made of this wonderful little gem.
only having just ordered this i saw this at the cinema several months ago-to get some understanding of what this is about is basically two guys who go round istanbul-with a suitcase full of microphones and digital recording gear-and....record it.
there it is-with me i have an open mind when it comes to music and did have this anticipation that it was going to be more traditional music-but as well as touching trad we also get a look at grunge, hip hop, modern acoustic, expeimental and just amazing instrumentalist's-one scene that springs to mind is a scene in a bar of non-stop allday drinking and some of the most amazing fastest playing you will ever see.
i could go on and mention along the way you meet some real and great character's-from those that are very poor to the extremly wealthy but all with a common love of music.
after watching this you'll find yourself probably thinking of visiting istanbul yourself-which i am still in the progress of sorting out for my next holiday!

5.0 out of 5 stars There is a world of magic, culture and fun...all in MUSIC, 16 Jul 2006
By L. Di Candeloro "Luca" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
How much do we really know of somebody else culture until we don't see them smiling, playing their music, talking to a "friendly" camera man? How much do we wish to know? It's about the magic that you find when you accidentally or not open a pandora box and discover an amazing universe of passion. So diverse in style but with the same pathos and will to connect two worlds. An act of love, of joy - at times of melancoly. Buy this DVD and expand your horizonts as you watch it.
